If you want it little, I suggest a Beagle (http://www.pups4sale.com.au/beagle_08a.jpg) or a Basset Hound (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/it/thumb/d/dd/Basset_Hound_profile.jpg/180px-Basset_Hound_profile.jpg)

Hope you find the dog you like :-)

Go for a Beagle. A dog that loves everyone. Very energetic. Doesn't shed a lot. Mine is the quietest of my three dogs but they can get noisy at times. They stay cute from puppy into adulthood with the big ears and big sad eyes. Plus a Beagle can be very funny, really goofy.

An even better people friendly dog is the APBT. About twice the size of a Beagle. Mine is four years old and is still a big puppy. She absolutly loves kids.
The other one is a Chi/Rat Terrier and sheds twice as much as the other two combined. But is loves everyone and is only 20 lbs, a great lap dog.
Here are my three.

You should get a Bichon Havanese. My mother is a professional dog breeder who breeds them, and I'm in love with these dogs. They have long fur that comes in lots of colors and they don't shed at all. They are small/medium sized. They are purebred and are registered/certified by the CKC and AKC. They are so playful when you are but when you are tired and just want to lay on the couch, they go join you to relax. They don't even bark. They're such good dogs. They only bark if your door bell rings, but once they see who it is and that they aren't harmful, they're quiet again. They don't make a sound. Here's my mom's website.

A poodle or poodle mix would be perfect for you. They are loving, gentle, and shed little if at all. Some people think they have weird haircuts, but the poodle cut is very practical.

Shelter Mutts!!!

Shelters have websites now. Your local SPCA and animal control will have many pets just like you describe.

If you want a pure breed you can't beat Tibetian Spaniels.
