Anyone can start most martial arts at any age. The MMA (like UFC, K-1, Pride, etc) you see on TV where the young 25 year olds are in their peak and fighting for the titles are the extreme cases. The majority of people do martial arts a little bit as a child, quit and then come back to it as an adult, or start martial arts for the first time as an adult. So you are part of the majority.
In fact, you are still very young if you are in college. I dont mean that in a negative way at all - in fact it is very positive. You have years and years and years of potential training ahead of you. And being in college means you probably have more time to dedicate to training than the 30 or 40 year old parent who has to work 60-70 hours a week. So, count yourself lucky and give it a shot.
Good luck!
PS. I wouldnt worry about ages and ability... most martial arts are a great equalizer. You can be older or richer or better looking or have an elite position (business owner, school principal, dean, governer, etc) and you get out on the floor and find the other person can whip your butt - it makes you reconsider "status" and such ideas.

Sounds like you're in a *bad* neighborhood for that... You could try getting a whistle. When someone starts following you, take out the whistle and start blowing on it really, really, loud. If they stop, get on your phone and *pretend* to be talking to 911. Say things loudly like "911? There's a strange man following me! I'm at this address! Yes, I'll stay on the line until the police arrive! (describe what he's doing, if you're really worried, make the 911 call connection and do this till they pick up). Unfortunately, keep in mind that this could backfire. Some nuts get crazy if you take a hard line... but they tend to get crazy no matter what you do, so I'd say go for it. My wife had this same problem and did this, it mostly worked. Finally she got Rollerblades and then was going to fast for the guys to bother her! (Now, however, she uses a car... but the image of her zipping by and some guy going-\ "HEY BABY HOW ABOUT...damn, she's gone..." \ was always pretty funny.

I don't think so at all, but I felt the same as you. I started martial arts training at 24, now I'm 31 and I love it - you should go for it. Just make sure to go to a school that has seperate kids & adult beginning classes. Almost all of them do, but I wouldn't be comfortable training with kids. I now work at a martial arts school teaching beginners. I would say that about 70% of the new students are over 25 years old.

I just started college and recently joined up with Krav Maga. It's not a wierd thing at all, lot of people do it. Besides, Krav Maga is for adults anyway because it deals with real life situations. Look it up, it's a very effective martial art. Read all about it. But avoid Commando Krav Maga because that is completely different from the original and is considered a joke.

it'll be fine to start now. they have adult classes at almost all martial arts locations. and many of the people in these classes, just started a few years, or months ago. that is to say, they all started as adults, just like you. did you know chuck norris didnt start his training until he was out of high school, in the airforce and went ot korea? so certainly being a college kid starting martial arts does not limit your possibilities at all.

My son started two forms of karate (one "hard" and one "soft") while in college. My father started judo in his 40's. I started jujitsu in my late 20's and wound up helping to teach the subject. Don't be embarrassed by anyone's age or ability. As long as you are in it to improve yourself, that is the only important thing. If you join just to show off, don't waste your time.
