You know that you're shopping at a good mall because it's clean, you feel safe and you see many stores that sell things that you like and can afford. Let's face it, not all of us can afford to buy high end label clothing or merchandise so a mall that only sells that sort of thing wouldn't work for most people. I like a mall that is clean, well secured and offers a variety of stores. In the DC area, Fair Oaks Mall and either of the malls at Tysons Corner fit that bill.

The way that I tell is that I start finding things I like every time I turn around and if they are on sale. Otherwise if something catches my eye and it looks like something I have at home or something that might match...thats how I tell that Im shopping at a good mall.

Prices of the item in each store. Probably lots of good stores to choose from.
Friendly services from the staff in each outlet store and securtiy and if there is a good sized food court where lots of people are hanging around eating at tables.

the difference between run-down Sears/JC Penny/individual opened stores that sell stuff so tacky most people wouldn't wear/use if they gave it away vs high-end boutiques (Gucci, Burberry, Lacoste) and premium department stores (Saks, Neiman Marcus).
