I am aware that a few members of the ordained clergy, mostly anglican, methodist, and othodox, have been allowed to become catholic priest. These men were carefuly screned by the church and the approval for them to become priest had to come from the pope. I was wondering if any of the bishops that have been appointed since this practice began have been married? Can a married priest be promoted to position of bishop in the catholic church? Is there anything with forbids this when they were allowed to come into the priesthood?

In the last twenty-five years at least seventy-seven married men have been ordained as Catholic priests in the United States.

All were ordained ministers in other Christian denominations.

Sixty-six of these married priests are former Episcopalians, seven are former Lutherans, three are former Methodists, and one is a former Presbyterian.

To the best of my knowledge:
+ There is nothing barring these men from becoming a bishop
+ None of these men have become a bishop

The first two responses are incorrect. There are a fair number of married Latin Rite Catholic priests, mostly former Anglican or Episcopalian priests who have converted to Catholicism. And of course in the Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church there are a great many married priests, since these rites of the Catholic Church (not the Orthodox Church) allow married men to become priests.

A married Priest, in the Catholic Church, cannot be a Bishop.

Catholic Bishop Milingo, an African, was married while a Bishop in a ceremony performed by Rev. Moon (of the "Moonies") He has since consecrated 4 married men as Bishops and they have all been excommunicated by the Pope.

Only a widowed man can become priest, he can even have children living. However, he cannot be married AND be a priest at the same time.

I would think that they would have to have their marriage dissolved by the church. I think that takes place.
