Depending on the department, you should expect many hours of basic training classes which include classroom and hands-on training. This is normally one night of every two weeks (at least it is in my county). In these classes, you will learn everything you need to know to be a volunteer fire fighter. You will mainly focus on the hands-on training techniques.

Make sure you are in good shape, physically speaking.

Best of luck to you.

First, Kudos for stepping up and helping your comunity. Depending where you are, the FD should teach you basic firefighter skills that all FF have to learn. The training can be fun and you will learn how to save a life. However when you do get THE call and go to an accident or fire be prepared it is not a classroom then.Let your training guide you and you will be fine. My best advice is dont miss a day of training. It is there to protect you. A dead volunteer can not help anyone.Rule number one is we all go home after a call. Dont make a mistake that causes death or injury to anyone. iF YOU CANT do the training ,get out . This is not a game.It is a privilage. I hope and pray you do well and listen and learn from you instructors. The best days are when all you do is wash the pump truck.

If your getting on a truck and going to a fire, you'll be trained in fire science. I am sure they will want you to get a firefighter first class status eventually. Many states make training mandatory.

I'm not a fireman but my daughters boyfriend just joined and he knows he will be taking a lot of training.
