It's supposed to be rare so not that many people can have it.

They are speaking of the the thyroid GLAND. If you have a sluggish thyroid it makes you gain weight and you can't lose it even with exercise or healthy eating.

It is not rare, it is a pretty common reason for overweight. In this instance they have no control over the fact they are heavy.

Because so many of us can't admit that we eat so much. Once we get into the obese stage, we face so many different disorders that are caused by the overeating. Diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol are among the popular problems among the heavy.
There are so many others that just make day to day life suck just a little more, sex drive drops, snoring can become dangerous (sleep apnea), joints start wearing down. That's enough for me. I gotta lose some weight.
Whose got the number for weight watchers?

I never knew that there were so many people who did.
I have thyroid disease which basically caused my metabolism to shut down and I gained allot of weight because of it.
I eat less now than I did when I was skinny because if I ate normal I would probably weigh 300 pounds.

But before this happened to me I used to make fun of fat people and thought they were disgusting fat pigs who deserved to be miserable for being so greedy.
I thought they wanted to be the way they are because they lack self respect and don't care about what others think.

But after this happened to me I realized that there's many things that can cause people to gain weight.
There's diabetes for example, almost everyone who has diabetes gains weight because their body cannot process sugar the way it's supposed to.

So you see I learned the hard way why people gain weight and cannot lose it.
I learned the hard way why I shouldn't judge them and ridicule them and make fun of them.
I learned just how awful it really is to be trapped in a body that's overweight and uncomfortable.
I learned to be understanding and compassionate to people who are large even if their that way because they overeat.

And take my advice because I know you don't want to end up like me.
Offer help if they need it and good advice too and if they need a chair because it's too hard for them to stand then give them yours.
Don't be mean or assume anything because one day it may be you that someone is doing that to and I know you wouldn't like that and neither would I.

It's an excuse they use. My cousin is grossly overweight, and that's what he keeps saying: gland problem. But then he's constantly eating pizza and fast food every night, his plates are always full to the gills when we have family get-togethers. It's a cop-out for most overweight people. You're right, very few can legitimately blame it on a gland issue.
