He could, the military can't abridge some religions freedoms, but it would be a bad idea. He couldn't wear it except under his t-shirt and the Marines want uniformity. The DIs won't want him to even have the cross, much less wear it.

I can tell you from experience that there is something he will like three times as much; a care package. Basic is hard and tough, but the military is fanatical about getting a person's mail to them. Include a care package with some cookies that he can share with his platoon and something personal for him.

Save the cross for a graduation gift.

Wait a couple of weeks and even the cheapest store bought cookies will be a huge treat for him. Since mail call is held in the open his friends will all crowd around him when he opens the package so make sure you have enough cookies that he can share. It is best to use store bought cookies since they are better packaged and will survive the rough trip better.

As for the something personal, remember that a crowd of guys will be all over him so don't send him your underwear or naughty pictures. But, you could send him a few recent pictures of you. Then he can show you off to his friends; just a few nice poses, maybe hiking the skirt up beyond the knee for a shot. Nothing R rated. Save that for a private letter when he is in Advanced Individual Training. Then he can open the letter and your private photos in private. That will do a lot to boost his morale.

He is going to be totally isolated and cut off from the world; he won’t even hear the news. So ANY communication with the outside world would be important. You might want to write him once a week and share any important news. It depends on how much you and he follow the news on what would be important. Clearly, any reports on Iraq would be important news to him and his gang. Even the DIs don’t have time to keep up on the news, except for the most important parts.

If he has a favorite TV show like American Idol then he would like to know who won. If make a tape then he won’t be able to watch it until reaching his first duty station, so that won’t be a good idea, but if you print out some news pictures on your computer and send those then that would be enough.

Receiving a letter in Basic Training is a major event, a package is a huge event. The slogan of the military is “Hurry up and wait” so he will have some odd moments to read and re-read your notes. Anything from you and the family would be a big morale booster.

The later it is in basic training the tougher it is and sometimes a letter from home received at the right time can be just what he needs to turn a horrible day into a good one.

Marine Corps recruit training regulations allow only a military issued neck chain with two ID tags (dog tags) and a simple wedding band if the service member is married.

Religious artifacts are not permitted to be worn during on duty time for any recruit.

No, he will not be able to wear ANY jewlry, not even a watch in basic. He gets to wear only specific clothing items (his uniform), nothing personal on him. He might be allowed such an item in his personal drawer/footlocker. I suggest you talk to the local recruiter, they can tell you what he can have, what he should bring, and what is strictly prohibited, as it may differ from branch to branch and by training base. I didn't get to keep anything acessable when i went to the AF, it was all in my bag, locked in a closet.

(edit - The best thing i got in basic was a stead supply of letters, they are NEEDED, not just recommended. He will also after a few weeks be able to write back!)

You can wear anything you want UNDER YOUR SHIRT as long as you claim religious significance. This also applies to Basic Training in the Air Force but we dont do alot of dangerous stuff in AF basic training. The Army and Marine Corps do, so for the 13wks of training he may be required to remove it from his body during certain aspects of training. But thats just during Basic Training.

Just to clarify all the incorrect answers, you ARE allowed a religious medallion in uniform IF you wear it only under your shirt. It cannot be visible in uniform during duty hours.
This MIGHT be different DURING basic training for some services.

Marine Recruits go through boot camp at one of two places, either MCRD-Parris Island, SC, or MCRD-San Diego, CA. Males who live east of the Mississippi River go to Parris Island. Males who live west of the Mississippi River go to San Diego. ALL females go to Parris Island. There are exceptions to this, such as, if a family member became a Marine in San Diego and you would normally go to Parris Island (because of where you live) you can ask to go through boot at Parris Island, as well, in order to graduate on the same parade deck as your relative. I think there are some other exceptions and your recruiter will know that information... By the way, the word Marine is always capitalized. Always. And, Marines don't attend "Basic Training," they go through Boot Camp.

Yes you can wear religious jewelry! It just has to be tucked in. Wait until after Basic training OR you can get him a nice ring with a cross on it.. God bless! Prior Service Hoorah!

Unless they changed things since I served you can wear one religious medal as long as it's 'small'....small meant that it was no bigger than your dog tags. I gave a small St. Christopher medal to a lady I know who's currently serving in Iraq....she wears it....so far, so good!

The answer to that is no. No jewelry allowed- except wedding bands. But most people don't wear them either for fear of losing them or messing them up.
The best thing to do is give him a picture of you. And then send him LOTS of letters once you get his address.
