Ok, there are 5 ppl in my family. Mom, dad, bro, sis and me. The youngest is 7 and the oldest is 15. We have a dog, who is 2 years old. He is a 10 lb fully grown dog from france. We think we are finally ready for a second dog, however we dont know which kind to choose. Our current puppy is a swetie pie, and will get along with any breed. We want along the lines of a bigger dog, because the dog we have now is as small as a loaf of bread! Mabye like a labrodor. We have about 10 fenced acres, so space will not be a problem for the dog. We would like a sweet dog, so a dog bred to fight will not do! Any suggestions as to which breed we should get would be greatly appriciated!! Thx so much!

10 acres, I would go with a golden retriever. My parents have one and even though it is hyper at first, after a few years they are just the best dogs. So smart and loving and very protective.

With that much land why not go for a really bog dog. In the past when I lived on 12 acres I had three dogs. The oldest and smallest was a Sheltie mix, about 30 lbs. We got an Old English Sheepdog, 90 lbs. The dogs got along great. The sheepdog was a big goofy clown. He loved everyone.
When a friend’s brother died she got his dog. She lived in town and had two labs so the third dog was too much. We took the dog. She was an Irish Wolfhound/ Great Dane mix and weighted around 145 lbs. She fit right in with the other dogs. She loved all people. Even with the size of the sheepdog and the monster they were great in the house.
None of the dogs ever bothered the horses, chased the chickens, cats or bugged the pigs.
If you are thinking of a dog in the 50-60 lb range then what about an APBT. I know what you are thinking, bred to fight. Wrong! They are the most people friendly dog there is. They were the most popular family dog from the early1900s to the 1950s. They were known as the "Nanny Dog" because they are so great with kids. Petey in the Little Rascals movies was a Pit Bull.
I raised my Pit from a puppy with my Beagle, bigger than he should be at 40 lbs, and my Chi/Rat Terrier, almost 20 lbs, and they get along great. The Pit is three times as big as the Rat but the Rat is top dog.
If you want a dog in the 20-30 lb, maybe bigger, then go for a Beagle. They are great dogs that do not have a mean bone in them. They love people and other animals, maybe except rabbits. Living in the country you will have a dog that will pick up a scent and follow it all day. They are cute as puppies, as all puppies are, and stay cute when they grow up with the big ears and big sad brown eyes. They can be a bit hard to train as their nose keeps distracting them. Hey, they are a hound.

You should definetly get a puppy so you can teach it easier if he gets any bad habits.

If you want a full breed I would suggest either a Boston Terrier(small to medium)they absolutley wonderful dogs...they do ahve some breathing problems but they are adorable and if you live in a cooler climate they usually do fine...Labs like you mentioned are wonderful family dogs, everyone recomends those =) easy to train, sweet, and they aren't SUPER big...after those I would say a Golden Retriver, they have a longer coat and you would ahve to groom him once or twice a week to keep his coat nice (oh and Boston's coats don't have to be groomed very offen =Dwhich is great since most all of the kids in your family are under 15y/o)

oh, and MUTTS =D of course they are awesome =) just make sure that when you get a dog make sure it isn't to dominate, but also not to humble (I can't thnk of the right word sorry =P)

I would really suggest a lab or a collie. These are good dogs that can do well in large open areas. Labs love to go out and run. They are good protector and loveable best friends at the same time. I would also suggest that you go look at the pound. There are several mix breed dogs that would do good in a wide open range. I hope you think about those type of dogs before you go and buy one.

Try the local Rescue organizations for a Labrador Retriever or a Golden Retriever. They will try to match the dog to your family. Both retrievers are very smart, easy to train, and get alone well with other dogs. They can also learn to exercise a lot or to sleep most of the time, as needed.

BTW, if you socialize a puppy correctly (see: Ian Dunbar books), then even a Pit Bull can be a sweet dog.

Try gong to your local shelter or humane society. Why sould you get a dog from a breeder that has a future where he will be safe when there are lots of dogs in shelters waiting for homes. Just look around and see what happens. There are many dogs that are mixed breeds and will have less medical problems than pure bred dogs. I highly suggest you get a dog from a shelter.
Please don't get one from a breeder.

I have a puggle (Pug and Beagle mix) he's the best dog I've ever had. I've had 4 dogs already. I love my puggle, he's extremely smart. I've had him for a year now, he loves everyone in the family, especially my dad. He loves to play and gets along really well with other dogs. He's very friendly, for instance, I babysit a four year old girl and she comes over to my house a lot to see my dog, my dog always greets her with a kiss and follows her around everywhere. My puggle is 25 lbs so shouldn't be a problem with your dog. Puggles range from around 16 lbs to 35 lbs, depending on the size of the beagle in the mix. I bought my dog at a store in Hickville, New York. There are plenty of stores and breeders across the U.S. Hope I helped! Anymore questions just e-mail me.

I think a border collie would be the best. Bordies collies need room to run and a playmate. They are great protection and get along with any breed. They have good cold and heat tolerance, but they do need grooming 2 or 3 times a week.
I hope I helped.

I have a springer spaniel and he is the best family dog we have ever had. He is just like another family member, he watches movies with us, sits around while we eat dinner and is easy to train and can learn lots of tricks and rules. He is very attached to the family and is protective of us. He gets along well with other dogs also.

A lab is a great choice for a family. Check out a rescue organization they usually have a lot of lab mixes. And there are also a lot of lab rescue groups. If you do end up going to a breeder make sure to do your home work labs can end up with a lot of health issues. Good luck.
