I doubt its a12 gauge...least I doubt it...it hs almost an 1inch wide (circular mind ya) barrel...no sight on barrel looks old forged...(hand made barrel)...but the hammer operates fine i dry fired it once just to be sure it seemed to work...

It`s probably a 10 gauge, the barrell on a 12 gauge is closer to 3/4 inch.

I would take it to a gunsmith (look in the yellow pages) and have them check it out. Most places will do this for free. This way not only can they tell you if it's safe to fire but they can also tell you the gauge.

Also, most guns have what they are stamped on the side of the barrel.

Most likely a 10 or 12 gauge, but you ought to take it to a gunsmith to check it out.

Is it a muzzle-loader or breech-loading shotgun? If it is a muzzle-loader, it could be any number or gauges.

it might be a 10gauge. 10, and 12 gauges are the most bought shotguns. take it in to a gun shop they'll tell ya
