She han't been social (hiding in the basement) since. Today she has a NASTY-furless-slimy mess on her face. I am a single mom of 2 young kids and can't afford a vet bill for something simple. Does anyone know what it might be or if it is puting my kids in harms way?

It doesn't sound like something simple or that can be treated at home, so I'm afraid I'll have to recommend you take the cat to a vet.

My guess, and it's only a guess, is that the lesion on her face is from a spider bite. The fact that it is a slimy mess indicates that the venom is actually dissolving her flesh. It will not heal on its own.

As you can imagine, this is very painful. In fact, it may fall into the realm of animal cruelty if you don't get it treated.

It is no danger to your kids, but if it is a spider bite your kids might encounter the same spiders.

Omg you have to find a way to get the money it will be atleast 700 dollars to get the cat fixed my 9 week old kitten had the same thing it starts off as a bubble there is larva in that bubble and it eats away at the face so if you dont get her to a vet she is gonna have a hole in her face the larva will eat away at the face!! so just take her to a vet its not gonna get any better!! Well if you get her to a vet like tomorrow you will only have to pay 100-150 dollars for anti-biotics!!

The first thing you have to find out is whether it is something she got into, and just is on the surface, or if it is coming from her.

Take a damp cloth and gently wipe over the mess, and see if it comes off. No telling what she might have gotten into in the basement. If it is on the surface, then child proof the basement so she doesn't get into things again.

If it is coming from her, then the obligation is to take her to the vet for a diagnosis. I know that is hard, but that is one of the things we take on when we have a pet. They depend on us.

Cat's often hide when they're in pain. And that sounds like an abcess. Not only is it dangerous, but may be fatal.

Your animal need vet care right now. Not next week. Right now.

It is not your cat's problem that you can't afford a vet. If you cannot afford vet care you cannot afford a cat. Please surrender your cat to a rescue group or no-kill shelter, where it can get proper care. Do it now before it's too late.

Your cat is depending on you to help her - WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

There's a serious problem when people can afford computers and internet service, but can't afford to care for the lives in their household. Nice priorities.

Your kids don't have to worry. Rabbies (maybe other diseases, like SARS) is usually the disease that spreads between different species. As for the bubble, if it doesn't go away, a trip to the vet might be the wisest thing. As to the cost, it is unfortunate. Unless you can find help with the cost from cat organizations.

You should hold her down and put peroxide in the bubble. It is probably an absess...But it may also be a Cuterebra. If it is a Cuterebra, then take your cat to the vet and let them remove it. It cost us $25 for them o remove it when our cat got it.
It is a larvae of a parasite...It can get in the skin and body of the human too. We looked it up and found pics of a surery on someone's eye due to Cuterebra. Taking her to the vet would probably be the best thing to do just to find out what it is...

That certainly will only get worse. You are responsible for this poor animal, so get her to a vet!!!!! You can work out payments. Do the right and honorable thing. Your kids won't starve.

it sounds like it might be an infection from your description. possibly a ruptured abscess. Unfourtunatley she should see a vet. do you have any low cost clinics in your area such as any associated with the humane society or aspca. I would definatley keep her away from your kids just incase it is some sort of bacteria or fungus.

Sounds like an abcess. And that means you need to take her to a vet. Cats don't show pain much, but you can bet it hurts! And it can make her very sick indeed. And a sick cat who is in pain can sometimes scratch and bite.
