Please don't use this question for political purposes. I know the job requires politics to intervene once inawhile, but not here. I don't want politics here, I want to know why you love your job, please stick to that. Thank you!!

'I've been in the business about thirty years. I have heard all the reasons of 'wanting to help others' and 'making a difference' and other related answers.
The truth is, we all have a need for the 'Adrenalin rush' that comes occasionally in this job. From the occasional pursuit, fight, getting a bad guy off the street, etc. that is part of our job.
Secondly, we love what we do. We love being part of a team that is able to be out here on the streets and poppin' the bad guys.

If you are looking for one certain answer, maybe to become an officer. No one can answer that for you! Sure they can make you feel good about becoming an officer but if you go into law enforcement for there reason, you will not last long ! Sometimes things aren't what they appear. Some years back after placing a 45 Glock to a sixteen year old child's face, high on crack made me a whole new type of officer. kinda like aging ten years after seeing your first new born come into the world! Of all the answers you receive remember this, " who are your love ones? Are you willing to die for your worst enemy? Can you except the real truth? Thus said, the one thing I love most from my profession, is knowing without any doubt if I died attempting to help another person, I had no fear of what the out come was before the call ever came. This kind of comfort only comes from one person, I need not say who this is " You know ". Greater love hath no man then this, that a man lay down his life for his friends! Directing this toward a brother or sister in law enforcement. THE BROTHERHOOD !

I have to second Bartman. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome that we can help people out here, but this job is just fun. You'll run into plenty of officers who are burnt out and have lost a lot of their passion, and I can see how double digit years on the job might do it. For me though, I hope a foot pursuit never stops giving a crazy adrenaline burst. Plus, you get to drive around with lights and sirens, pretty cool huh?

As a candidate in the police academy I can say it is to give back to my community. I live in a small town, I've been here all my life and want my kids to have the same safe atmosphere to grow in that I had. This comes from a well trained, diversified police department. My father is a police officer and my cousin is one as well and seeing the gratification they get from serving their communities is just more fuel for me to do my job to the best of my ability.

I'm retired now, but I became one to help people. Over the years I did manage to save some lives, protected a lot more, and had one great time doing it. Yes, I was hurt several times. I've been shot 3 times and stabbed twice. I've had a few broken bones too. I was finally so badly injured in the line of duty that I had to retire. Would I do it again? Heck yes. Have I encouraged my kids to go into law enforcement? heck no. Remember this simple rule: everybody loves firemen, everybody hates cops.

Lots of negatives, but when you go home knowing that you made a positive difference in someone's life, it makes all the negatives seem not so bad.

My friend keep quiet and follows guidelines.
I have a question
Would Frank Serpico, formerly of the New York Police Department, be considered a hero or a troublemaker today?
