They have people that you can contact through a good therapist that takes you through the situations that cause you anxiety and as you get through them , you learn to control the anxiety. Like I had agoraphobia (a fear of people) especially groups like in a restaurant. So I got this helper and we went to bigger and bigger restaurants always starting at a slow time of day and working up to busy time/ Then we went to Wal Mart in the middle of the night and worked up to Sunday mornings when people flock there like it is the "Church of the World". Anxiety thus lessens as you deal with the situations that cause it.

First and foremost, find yourself a good therapist with whom you feel comfortable with. He or she can help a great deal in discovering what triggers your attacks. That was a great step for me. Then you can get on the road to healing or at least coping. Try the slow deep breathing exercises. Slowly in through the nose (4 count), hold (4 count) slowly exhale through the mouth completely. Ask your Dr. or therapist to show you the proper way. It helps me alot and also keeps me from hyperventilating when I have an attack. We know were not going to die from a P/A but it still stinks. Hang in there.

The best way to cope with anxiety attacks, in my opinion, and experience, is to learn a good relaxation technique. Most people won't do this because it requires effort and time. There are a number of good methods (do a google search), but the secret is to practice daily. Once you learn to relax, you can anticipate an "attack" and cue your "relaxation response."

doing cognitive therapy with a psychologist who specializes in anxiety disorders...there are many exercises and ways of thinking they can teach you.

I have also found it helpful to read as much as possible on it.

I really don't recommend drugs myself, but right now I'm taking a super low dose of lexapro, and it helped within an hour to calm me down, but I still feel like myself, and have emotions and everything, and I still get anxious from time to time, but it does help me from freaking out.

Good luck!

Yoga breathing exercises really really help.

Designate a certain room a safe place in your house. a place where if you to. only you are allowed in there. place in there things that make you comfortable. pictures of family, music, some junk food.

find a mantra like - I am only afraid to live because I am afraid to die but i will live on and will not be afraid.

repeat that over and over while trying to slowly breath.

Aromatherapy. I know it sounds stupid, but it's helping me a great deal. Lavender, rose, sandalwood, and mint oils are usually what I use. Be careful though. Anxiety attacks can cause other problems in your body, too. If you can't control them, please see a doc. Good luck!
