Undocumented Immigrant and Illegal Alien are virtually synonymous. But a person could have documents yet violate their terms and become out of status or illegal. They could also be here legally, but wait up to 7 years for their green card (they are not really undocumented because they have a little slip of paper called an I-94)
Aliens are subject to "removal" (aka deportation), only if they are ordered to leave by an immigration judge. As a practical matter, ICE doesn't go out of its way to get removal orders for people who aren't felons, deserving of removal. Most persons who are caught are not deported, they agree to "voluntary departure."
The Border Patrol gets a large number of Guatamalans who claim to be Mexican. Each agent will ask them questions about Mexico (Who is the Vice-President of Mexico? How many sectors in Guadalajara?, what is pisto?), then call them liars and threaten them until they confess (or 'break'). This can take hours. Mexicans are asked so sign a document waiving a hearing and agreeing to return to Mexico. If they do not sign, the agent yells at them until they do. If he can't get them to sign by intimidation, they are sent to detention for 3-6 months until the court finds time to have a removal hearing. If they claim political asylum (esp. Chinese and Cubans), they could be released on parole with permission to work until their hearing.
When Mexicans are returned, a Mexican immigration officer checks IDs or asks questions about Mexico to see if they are citizens. If he spots a foreigner impersonating a Mexican, he refuses to accept them back into Mexico, and the Border Patrol must send them to Detention. When they break and agree to Voluntary Departure or are ordered removed, they are sent by plane to their home country.
Besides chasing people and looking in ditches, Thats what agents do - all day long.

Forget amnesty. It would be better to crack down on employers of illegals, and one way to do it would be to issue a $100 bounty for information that results in the conviction of any employer who hires illegals. A good place to start would be with landscapers and contractors, who routinely hire illegals. For leads, you go to where the illegals wait for day jobs, and make video recordings of vehicles that stop and pick them up. By cracking down on employers in a big way, the job market for them dries up, and there reason for being here is demeaned. Already a great number have left because of the sluggish economy. Eliminate their work prospects and the illegals will voluntarily deport themselves for free. Amnesty will not work very well because a great number of the illegals have NO INTEREST AT ALL in becoming American citizens. So they will keep on doing what they are doing and nothing will be accomplished. They did not sneak into this country illegally because they wanted to become citizens.

Look people get deported and come back the next day. Unless they are criminals they are all welcome!
A line from a poem, “The New Colossus,” by the nineteenth-century American poet Emma Lazarus. “The New Colossus,” describing the Statue of Liberty, appears on a plaque at the base of the statue. It ends with the statue herself speaking:
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

undocumented is just the politcally correct word for illegal yes. And yes they get deported to their country of origin.
I would imagine sometimes this takes a bit of time to determine. So you would sit there in jail until then.

When you are going to be deported, they ask you questions about where & how you passed across the border. They ask when, who you were with, who financed you, etc., and, they find interpreters to speak with you, so, it would be hard to convince them if you are not actually from there. For example, I speak Spanish fluently, and, i could differentiate between cuban spanish, spain spanish, and, mexican spanish fairly easily.

Here is the definition of "PC"
"Political correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end. "
