If you have bipolar disorder or, preferably, if you a therapist/psychiatrist with experience with bipolar disorder, have you ever noticed that depressive and manic peaks tend to sync up with the moon phase? I'm asking because I have bipolar disorder and one day I noticed that I'd been having a lot of manic peaks around the full moon and more depressive peaks around the new moon. So I started marking on my calendar when my peaks took place, and sure enough they synced up with the moon phase about 90% of the time. It's not enough data to say for sure that there's a definate correlation, but considering I've been noticing the same trend for about six months I think it's worth looking in to. Anyone else noticed something similar?

My brother had bipolar type 2 for many years. (This means that the manic episodes are more moderate; they are called "hypomanic" episodes.) It was considered just depression for a long time. When his last psychologist said it was bipolar, I wondered about it because I never saw him in what I would think was a manic state. He would just cycle from sort of normal to very very bad depression. At one point he decided to go to medical school even though he was already about 37 years old. I suppose you could consider that manic in a way, although he was more than smart enough and he did get admitted to medical school. Unfortunately, the stress was too much and he had a really bad breakdown and had to leave school. Anyway, his psychologist said that his "manic" or "hypomanic" phases were pretty much just what most people would consider a fairly normal, happy mood. Most of the time he was a very nice guy who had lots of friends. But sometimes when he was what I thought was depressed, he would get really hostile and yell at people, and also stay in bed all day. But I've also heard that hostility is a sign of manic behavior. Also, he used to cut himself when he was in high school, and he eventually committed suicide. You would think that would mean depressed, but I've heard this can also be a sign of manic behavior. When depressed, you don't want to do anything. When manic, you want to do something, even if it is harming yourself. So manic would not necessarily be happy.
