I have a male kitten about 5 months old, that I just had neutered
at the Humane Society about 3 1/2 hours ago. When they returned him to me, I noticed small blotches of blood in his carrier (which I assumed was normal). After getting him home, I noticed that he was dripping blood from his scrotum.
It seems to have slowed a bit now, but I'm concerned. My sister had her male cat done last year, and said it's fairly normal for a bit of blood to drip out for the first several hours after the operation, and that it should eventually stop. Should I be concerned?

Call a local vet and ask your question, they'll answer better than anyone here can, and questions are free! :-) I'm sure it's probably nothing to worry about, but better safe than sorry. (I can't believe they sent him home immediately after a neutering operation - most vets keep the animal 24 hours after a neutering!)

Some seeping of blood after a neuter is normal, but if it's still dripping several hours after the surgery, it is not normal. If the shelter is still open, call them and ask what to do. They may have you bring the kitten back in. Most of the time, animals adopted from a shelter come with a coupon good for a first vet exam -- this is the time to use it, if you can find a vet open.
The surgery might have nicked a blood vessel, or it is remotely possible that the kitten has a blood clotting disorder, possibly related to a vitamin deficiency caused by his mother having poor nutrition while she was pregnant.
The problem should be easy to correct but I wouldn't let it go on.

It is a good thing that you are concerned about your cat. It shows that you are a good pet owner. There should be more ownder that are that concerned about their animal and neuture them. As far as bleeding is concerned yes they cna bleed for up to 8 hours. If it is just a drop or to I would not be to concerned. I would watch him carefully though. If you see that the bleeding is not stopping I would call the vet and see if you could bring him in for a check. You also need to watch for any swelling and and any discoloration of teh skin. Sometimes if they do not get the vessels clamped off all of the way there can be internal bleeding and can cause death. Ido not want to scare you but I believe in a person being aware of what can happen. Thanks for being a good owner.

Cats' incisions are not stitched closed after neutering, because the scrotum is very sensitive skin, and the sutures would be very itchy, which would cause the cat to chew itself raw. A small amount of blood immediately after surgery is normal, but if you are concerned, see if you can have somebody take a peek at it. It's hard to say for sure if somethng is normal or not when you can't see it.

If the bleeding is stopping then that's a good sign - it means his blood is clotting like it's supposed to. Watch the area closely for signs of swelling and keep the cat confined to a room and as inactive/calm as possible. If he was only neutered 3.5 hrs ago then a bit of bleeding is not abnormal. The amount of blood loss you've described doesn't seem alarming to me, but again it's important to watch for any more. If you notice profuse bleeding he needs to be taken to the vet ASAP. If you notice a large amount of swelling he should also see a vet.

i'd telephone the vet in this top away and replace them. What you observed isn't well-known, there could be no blood or throbbing. sure they catheterize a cat whilst doing a neuter, besides the fact that it is not meant to harm 2 days later.

No this is not right.Get him back right away. There should be no bleeding at all. He may have broken a stitch or even more. Please don;t wait. He could bleed to death if this is the case.
