This would include roughly 10 dear friends. I was thinking of making an e-vite for the dinner.

lol lol i'm not laughing at the question but I think people misunderstood it...or else I did. But the way I interpret it, you want to plan a birthday dinner that only you are going to attend since your family and friends are away. If I'm wrong correct me but if I'm right then it would look a little tacky to others if you go to dinner yourself but it doesn't mater what others think, do what you want that will make you happy. It's your birthday so you have every right to enjoy it with or without people! But I still feel I miss interpreted the question, I hope you are not really going to be having dinner by yourself. Invite a co-worker or neighbor.

As my mom (who is annoyingly OBSESSED with manners and even owns manners/etiquette books) has said, "People over the age of 21 should never host a birthday party for themselves, because it is a way of calling attention to yourself, and many people will think of buying you presents even though they ordinarily wouldn't, unless you were throwing a party for yourself, which is awkward and brings me back to my point, blah, blah, blah, etc........"

But come on! It sounds like you really need some birthday fun. Instead of throwing a party "for yourself," an easy solution would be to invite a couple of your best friends to go out and do something fun together. (a bike ride, go to the movies, get your nails done, etc.) Then, take them out for lunch or dinner. It would be your treat for them, but in honor of your birthday, and its just a small group so it's not like throwing a birthday party for yourself.

Happy birthday!

Why would it be tacky? Tell your friends that it is your birthday and you don't want to be alone, so you would love it if they could join you for dinner to celebrate.

I think its a healthy idea. I am not certain how the payment works out, but there is nothing wrong with wanting to celebate your birthday with friends given the circumstances.

Not at all! If you have the resources, it's far less work than planning for one at one's own home. I also know many people with tiny apartments in urban areas who have to plan parties offsite all the time.

WHY NOT?!?! haha! when i endured a bad break up once, i threw a pity-party for myself and about 15 friends. treat was on me. i felt so good after that. haha

but anyway, why not? we gotta pamper ourselves once in awhile. and it aint so tacky anymore that there are 10 people accompanying you! go enjoy yourself! :)
