I have found a small glass of wine can be helpful too. Wine has many health benefits as well.

I don't know if you consider this a sleep medication...I don't think it's like a sleeping pill (I can't take those either)......I take benedryl. It takes about an hr. to work, but it makes you sleepy. Don't get the daytime one...or it won't make you sleepy. I've been doing this a few years. Before that I had years of not being able to fall asleep. I still don't sleep deeply, but at least I can fall asleep now. Also, there are certain kinds of tea( cammamile) that are supposed to help you sleep. If you have "racing thoughts" there are medicines for that, but you'd have to go to the dr. Or maybe you need a muscle relaxer (medication). I usually set the tv on a timer for 30 min. and I usually fall asleep before it goes off. At least if I wake up,I know I went to sleep. There are also sleep disorder clinics and also there's sleep apnea (you can google it) Also, there is melatonin...which helps you sleep after you change time zones etc. Turkey has something in it that makes you sleepy. Hope other people come up with better ideas. I tried sleeping pills, but they made my legs hurt.Find a talking tape of somebody with a soothing voice...that used to help me. I'm looking forward to other people's answers...hopefully they'll be better than mine. I won't mind not getting 10 pts. if we can find a good solution for sleeping disorders. Good Luck !!

I hear you, Its 428am right now. Ugh.
breathing deeply with eyes closed sounds too simple, but it works for me. non-caffeinated teas can help for some people, but I find lying down on empty stomach is uncomfortable. I'd say calming music helps me most. Actually, I have trouble falling asleep without it now becasue I can't make myself relax.
Turkey is supposed to help too. I take Benedryl, that helps.
I agree with the man a couple people above me in suggesting imagination. You'll fall asleep in the process.
Never ever ever count sheep. Why people say to do this, I don't know. In all seriousness, I kept imagining the sheep tripping over the fence and ending up in a large pile. Not relaxing.
Also, I'd like to give message to: Wiseguy II. ((above)you don't give email)) Though your answer was ridiculous to my last question, it made me laugh after 4 days without smiling. thank you.

go to bed at the same time and rise at the same time every day, even on weekends. do not drink caffeine after 12 noon. read a really boring book. don't lay there watching the clock, get out of bed, do something boring and then go back to bed. take a hot shower before bed. make sure your bedroom is a bedroom and not an entertainment room, computer room. you may need an antidepressant, which will effect the seratonin in your brain. talk to a doctor.

Yeah that's happened to me before too. I guess the best advice would be...
1. Don't watch TV or work on the computer before you go to bed
2. Don't eat before
3. Don't exercise before
4. Take a warm shower before
5. Try to wake up naturally.
I don't know if it will work, cause it works for some people, but doesn't for others. Hope it works out!

3 thing that work for me:
-Try to imagine a future Life/career (like a fantasy or a dream life), imagine interacting with friends, imagin living your future life as you lay there and you'll fall asleep before the imagining is done.
-Try reading in bed as you lay down (not sitting-up)
-Try watching a movie on a laptop as you lay down.
(the whole Idea with the 1st way is to keep you distracted of your daily problems and worries that are keeping you up)
(the whole idea with the last 2 ways, is to get your eyes somewhat tired and while your head is on the pillow your brain would send the only signal that it can to relief your eyes)
Feeling sleepy, I know I am.
Sweet dreams.

Difficult one that, I too have sleep problems, its all about clearing the mind, which is easier said than done, try listening to music or watching something light on TV that usually works for me, better still do this in bed and you should drift off pretty quickly.
good luck & sweet dreams

If all things don't work I'd just try some Tylenol PM. It's pain/sleep aid.
Could try different pillows, sheets, or Turkey. People say Turkey makes you sleepy.

go your room don't lay on the bed and sit on the chair and don't do anything. pray to GOD in silence. once you are getting sleepy . turn off the light and lay down on the bed. try not to sleep. then you'll find yourself wake up in the morning. In other words, try not to sleep and don't do anything just be calm and silent. you will be sleepy then. if you are not sleepy then don't sleep and do this way every night.

definitally try exercise, nothing can get you more physically and mentally tired as exercising can. Ofcourse don't exercise right before bed, that'll just get you more energized. Seriously try this, if this doesn't work you may need to consult your physician. You don't want this to get outta hand it can drive your whole system outta wack. Good luck
