it doesnt hurt. they numb your throat and stick it down. u'll probably be in a twilight sleep still awake but out of it. It is common today to put you totally asleep. u should have asked your doc all these questions when he said you needed one done. its a very common proceedure and if you are young and healthy otherwise you have nothing to worry about.

Your physician is evaluating you for GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. This happens when your lower esophageal sphincter (between your stomach and your esophagus) does not close properly. Stomach acids are forced into your esophagus, making it irritated and inflamed. Barrett's Esophagus, a precancerous condition, can occur if your esophagus becomes inflamed and erodes. Esophageal cancer may then occur. Your physician wants to make sure none of this is happening.
Read about endoscopy at http://www.medicinenet.com/endoscopy/article.htm.
I have had an esophagogastroduodenoscopy, or EGD, done.
You will have to fast (this is called NPO, which means nothing to eat or drink, not even water) after midnight the day before the procedure. This is because if you vomit you may aspirate, or breathe, some of the vomit into your lungs and this can cause complications.
You will be given medication (sedatives) such as Versed so that you will probably not remember the procedure, although you will be conscious during it, rather than being "put to sleep". You may feel as though you are dreaming that the procedure is happening; this is common.
You may have some nausea after the procedure; tell the physician immediately if you feel nauseated and you will be given an antinausea medication such as Phenergan. You will be sent home shortly after the procedure. Please have someone available to drive you.
I know you are frightened; but endoscopies are very common procedures. If you do have GERD, or have a damaged esophagus, you can begin taking medication immediately and should feel better within 3-8 weeks.

Were you tested for aetus hernia? I suffer from this condition and was on Zantac, like a stronger Tums for the tummy.
The trick is to find out what is causing this for me it was carbonated drinks, pop, fizzy wine.
I have to go for an endoscopy, my specialist advised it is a four hour deal. You go to the hospital they give you freezing to prevent the gag reflux, and will be sedated to calm you but you probably won't be out, you cannot drive after so you need to have someone pick you up or take a taxi.
I'm a bit nervous too about having to have the procedure done, don't worry if they do put you to sleep you will wake. I have had an operation and when I woke I had a hard time remembering who I was and why I was in hospital but it all rushes back within a minute. Good luck

no, it doesn't hurt to be put to sleep. they'll put the medicine in your iv. i prefer that to the gagging from the tube from the test. i've had both ways, awake(horrible) & asleep. you won't be asleep long. with reflux, you have to change your diet(no spicy foods, milk, greasy foods, etc. & no eating 3 hrs. before bed. if the reflux has been choking you, they may have to stretch your esophagus. some antiinflammatory's cause reflux also. they'll take a little tissue also to make sure there's no cancer, but you won't know it. let them give you a nap so you'll be relaxed because being awake is a nightmare for the endoscopy. trust your dr. go to web md .com & look up endoscopy. and no caffein either. god bless

Generally for this type of procedure you would have what is callled "moderate sedation". It's a level of sedation, where you can still respond to verbal commands, or light stimulus, but won't remember or be aware of what is going on. A few of the typical medications that are used are Versed, Demerol, Propofol.

I've had it done. My biggest problem was fasting all night. They give you a pill and you are sound asleep while the procedure is done. I don't remember a thing. And they do a lot of these every day.

I would recommend getting some Ginger and keep it in the freezer. Next time you make a hot drink like coffee or tea,put some in it.
