My brother got a pet rat and I was wondering what a good diet for him is?

A good diet to feed your rat is what is called a "Block Diet" or as everyone else said the pellets. The reason for this is that it provides more nutrition. When you give your rat seed it is like a treat for them. The rats can choose what they want and leave everything behind so they can loose nutrition that way. The block diet also provides a good substance to chew on. Rats ALWAYS need things to chew on. Their teeth always grow- making them a part of the rodent family. If they get to long it can be really bad for your rat and that can result in the need to get your rats teeth trimmed. Which isn't very cheap. Rats do really good with most vegtables. Don't over feed though. Again the veggies should be given once a day. Rats like salty things. So anything salty would be a treat for them. Rats can pretty much eat most human foods, but that doesn't mean it is good for them. Provide veggies like carrots and collard greens. Stay away from lettuce and such because it is mostly water and not nutritional. They also have little treats at the store you can give them. But don't go overboard on those either, cause that can result in a fat rat! Things like Hamsteroids are a good treat. They provide a good chewing surface and a minimal amount of vitamins. Not enough to supplement anything! Also Rats like Bananas and oranges. Oranges are good to give to rats because of the vitamin C. I hope this information helps.
F.Y.I. Whatever diet you choose be sure to keep him on it. Changing his diet all the time can make him sick.

What Do Pet Rats Eat

I feed my rat a basic hamster mix, he will refuse all the rat diets and pellets obstinately, and the pellets to prevent selective feeding, were just non-existant feeding.

Outside of that, he gets a good base of fruit (grapes, pear, apple, etc), veg (sometimes lettuce, cucumber, peas, runner beans), brown bread, and ocassionally cheese. I also give him plain biscuit as a treat (very) ocassionally, things like spaghetti if we've had it. He also gets cooked meat - his favourite being chicken - and egg yolk (he won't eat the white part). Everything in moderation of course.. his diet is only maybe 40 - 50% pre-mixed.. and he's a good weight and size, and very healthy. I sometimes put in treat bars and such, but given the choice he'll much rather fresh foods.. it just makes it easy if I don't have anything for a day, and supplies some nuts + seeds in his diet.

Interesting note, I read that red grapes (and some other things - brussels, brocolli and some others) are very good for them, apparently they help prevent cancer or tumours in rats. True or not, he loves red grapes anyway.

Not too much sugar, fat or protein. Mine gets meat usually once a week.

Good luck, and hope this helps.

First things first, your pet rat may not of eaten the poison and some other ferel creature did. Being stuck in that hole, your rat will be terrified and probably afraid to move from its little hiding hole. But rats are intelligent creatures and will not starve to death in that little hole, eventually, she will venture out. What I have done in the past when my mice have done a bunk is placing a cardboard box with a little hole in it on the floor with plenty of bedding, food and dish of water. Every night i would sneak up on the box and cover the hole quickly before it even knew i was there. For the first few nights you will probably only catch an empty box, but with time, you'll get her :)

Rats eat a varity of foods. Get a mix from your petshop, and feed them fruit and vegies. Do NOT feed the rat cheese! It will make it's urine smell really bad. Also stay away from strong vegies, like onions. By the way they only use cheese on rat/mouse traps because it sticks easily and has a strong smell.

You can buy commercial rat pellets. Rats also enjoy eating fruits and vegetables. Nothing with sugar or chocolate in it though.
