Text messages are the most inexpensive way to communicate with the telephone. You do not need any special codes. Just dial the number as you would if you were calling with voice and send your text. This is a great way to stay in touch and not spend a lot of $$$

Yes I SMS overseas, both from my mobile and from the internet.

On my mobile phone (and most others I think) just use +(Country code) and the mobile number without the first leading zero. The plus sign does the same thing as dialling 0011.

Pennytel are a Voice over IP (VOIP) company that does cheap overseas SMS as well.

yeah i have sent text messages overseas to Hong Kong and Singapore. However i am pretty sure we needed to use the international code in order to send. You drop the first zero of the mobile number and add +whatever the code is at the front. It is simple and i have never had any trouble sending text messages.

my daughter in Australia sends text messages to us in Canada all the time

does your friend in Canada know about the 1010710 cheap phone calls from Canada to Australia? 25 minutes for 99 if its available where they are in Canada,I'm in Ontario and use it to call home all the time
they just dial 1010710 then dial the same way they usually do, cost will appear on their normal phone bill but rate goes up if you go longer than the 25 minutes
