My first instinct was that your teacher meant to ask, "What are 5 suburbs that are in the City of Los Angeles?" Because to say otherwise would not make any sense, right? And has already stumped 10 people including myself. For to say, "What are 5 cities that are in the City of Los Angeles?", it is an enigma, a puzzle that cannot be solved.
Hmmm... Pieces of a puzzle, and then that is when it hit me. To follow along you will really need to have a map of the City of Los Angeles that includes the many cities that are not Los Angeles. I have provided one for you that serves just this very purpose. The City of Los Angeles is shown in white while all other cities within the County of Los Angeles are represented as being gray.
Please take notice the areas in gray, that are completely engulfed by the Los Angeles City boundaries, are in fact cities themselves. The Los Angeles City borders are so massive that they essentially surround other cities within it and in some cases leave them so entirely surrounded that they can boarder no other city except for the City of Los Angeles on all its sides. 5 of these cities in particular are Beverly Hills, Culver City, Santa Monica, San Fernando, and West Hollywood. Some of these cities even contain zip codes that are in reality in the City of Los Angeles.
So now when your teacher gives you your bonus 10 points for being the only cool kid in school that got this one right, just remember to come back here and give me mine. :-)
P.S. Please also note that:
· Beverly Hills is only bordered by the Santa Monica Mountains, West Hollywood, and the City of Los Angeles.
· Culver City is only bordered by unincorporated communities in the Los Angeles area and the City of Los Angeles itself. A portion of Culver City is in 90066, a ZIP code in the City of Los Angeles.
· Santa Monica is only bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the City of Los Angeles.
· San Fernando is only bordered completely by the City of Los Angeles all around.
· West Hollywood is only bordered by the Santa Monica Mountains, Beverly Hills, and the City of Los Angeles.
· (With the map at hand, I see no way of entering Beverly Hills, Culver City, San Fernando, and West Hollywood from any of their sides without first entering the boundaries of the City of Los Angeles. Santa Monica you can swim to, but otherwise would also be engulfed by the colossal city.)
· Baldwin Hills, Marina Del Rey, Universal City, the V.A, and View Park are not cities but rather unincorporated communities.
· The City of Pasadena is outside the City of Los Angeles.
Just goes to show you that there are no stupid questions...
P.P.S. If you use my top 5 and your teacher meant cities in the County of Los Angeles then you will still have the right answer. If your teacher does mean cities inside the City of Los Angeles then my top 5 also serves as the correct answer. Only if your teacher meant to say suburbs and not cities should you disregard my answer and instead go with Sender's answer directly above me, as that would otherwise be, as the case may very well be, the correct answer.
· The cities of Bell Gardens, Glendale, and Huntington Park surround the City of LA, not vice versa. I would count Redondo Beach, good answer GetaGrip. But who is the California Sheriff Department? Did you mean to say the California Highway Patrol or LA County Sheriff Department?
*/End of Line.

All of the other answers do have some validity even RT(R) who appears to be a wonderful, kind and thoughtful person.. While LA is its own city there are neighborhoods that surround the down town area of LA that have city designations. such as...
Watts, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Hollywood, Hancock Park, Bel-Air, Hollywood Hills, Pacific Palisades, and Brentwood and Beverly Hills.
Edit: Gotta say I think that superman nailed it. good map and concise answer.
Your teacher probably wanted to know the names of Cities within Los Angeles County. There are many. Try your own search engine and make sure you spell the city name right.
Good luck.

This is confusing, because Los Angeles IS a city, so there are no other cities in Los Angeles at all (I live there, so I should know). If they mean cities within the Los Angeles area, a few would be Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Culver City, Santa Monica, and Pasadena. All of these touch on the borders of Los Angeles and are independent cities.

There are incorporated cities that are surrounded by Los Angeles, but not part of the city of Los Angeles. They would have their own separate city government and possibly police force. If they do not have their own police force, they would be served by the California Sheriff dept and not by LAPD.
Hollywood, Van Nuys, Woodland Hills etc ARE NOT CITIES. They are neighborhoods and part of Los Angeles. They vote in Los Angeles City Elections and their public schools are part of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).
Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Bell Gardens, Glendale, Redondo Beach, Huntington Park are cities in their own right and are fully contained within the city of Los Angeles.
This would not be a complete list.
