Does the New Testament require the Old Testament to build on, or could it be a stand-alone?

They very much belong together. Jesus studied and knew every line of scripture. The problem was that he taught the higher law. He reminded others of scripture that they by-passed.

The Old Testament bears witness of Christ. The Prophets and the Psalms speak of Him. The purpose of the covenant with Abraham was to open the blessing given to him to the whole world. Without the Old Testament, there is no foundation for Christ.

Both are important. The old testament was under a covenant that required quick justice, there was a sacrifice of animals for sins. In the new testament the is a new covenant since Jesus paid the price for our sins. God still hates sin, but sometimes a person may die before seeing the judgment for their sins. Because of this people think it must be OK. Most people don't read the bible that many have died to protect for us. All the answers to our problems are in the bible.

The New Testament is hidden in the Old, and the Old is revealed fully in the New.

The law came by Moses, but Grace and Truth came by Jesus Christ. Same story; singular theme; two different views of it.
It is generally viewed that the Holy Spirit authored both Testaments.

One God, one salvation, one faith.

The OT and NT speak of the same things. The situations were a little different at time, but, they speak of the same things. Keep in mind, JESUS read from the OT, Paul read from the OT, Peter read from the OT, etc. In the NT, there was only the OT!

GOD bless
