Whenever I move to a bigger place with a nice yard, I'd like to get another dog. German Shepherds are so smart, and Great Danes are so adorable. I've never had first hand experience with a Great Dane though. The next dog I get will come from a rescue.

Which one would be best with a cat, mini dachshund, basset/beagle and border collie mix?

I don't know much about Great Danes, but I know for a fact that a German Shepherd will get along with all your pets! :)

Back in my past I had two dogs, a Sheltie mix, 20 - 30 lbs, an Old English Sheepdog at 90 lbs and many cats, like 13. The sheepdog would chase the cats but was too big a klutz to catch them.
But I digress, a friends brother died and she got his dog. She already had two Labs and the new dog was two much.
I added it to my pack on my 12 acre ranch. She loved everyone. She got along with the other dogs, the cats, horses, chickens, pigs and was a great house dog.
Oh, I forgot to mention she was an Irish Wolfhound and Great Dane mix. She weighted 145 lbs. She and the ABPT I have now are the greatest dogs I have ever had.
Go for a Great Dane or mix.

It really depends on the individual dog more than the breed. Either breed could get along well with smaller animals. I have two german shepherds and they both get along well with my cats. The older one tolerates my father's papillon (she's not fond of puppies in general, regardless of size) and my younger one adores him.

One thing to keep in mind if you're looking at getting a puppy, Great Danes are VERY large and VERY uncoordinated puppies. They are more likely than a GSD puppy to accidentally injure a smaller animal because sometimes they literally can't control their bodies. And adult dog of either breed that is known to be good with smaller animals would probably be your safest option.

Either one would be fine IF they are taught to respect the smaller animals. Getting along is not a given even if it is a Dane and not getting along isn't a given if it is a GSD. It is as individual as the dogs themselves are.
I've known Danes that couldn't get along in a house with smaller dogs or cats and I've known (and owned) GSD that were absolutely wonderful with small dogs & cats.

I would go with a Great Dane over a German Shepherd. Great Danes are very large dogs and are known to be docile and even lazy. They aren't very aggressive so you shouldn't have problems with your smaller dogs.

If you're going to go the rescue route (awesome!) then you might want to do a few "play dates" with your current dogs. Shelters are very used to this type of situation and will usually encourage these meetings.

Best of luck!

the breed dose not really mater the only thing that maters is if they get a long if they are nuetared males they should be fine. if the new dog is a puppy it should be fine. if the dog you get is older then all the rest you could have a problem. if the dog you get is not neutaered and you have a nother male in your home that also could be a problem. but both breeds at at the top of my favroit dog list. next to bulldogs that is. but great danes are gental giants and german shepareds are great tempered. good luck!

If you socialize your dog properly then it should get along with any dog. It's all about introducing them to other dogs when they are a pup. Shepards are very good guard dogs, obviously the larger the dog the better the intimidation factor as far as being a guard dog is concerned, however any dog that barks can be a good guard dog.

I completely think that it depends on the training, and the time that you are willing to spend with the dog. Dogs are only as good as you train them to be. Either of the dogs you have chosed would get along with whatever you train it get along with. As long as you are willing to work with your dog, all dogs are smart and adorable and whether they come from a breeder or a shelter they can always be taught new tricks and behaviors.

I love my danes and could not imagine my life without them. Absolutely, a Dane would get a long with a small dog, cats etc. They are the gentle giants.
