like "God forbid anything should happen to us!"

in that sense?

it simply means "I really hope....", like "I really hope nothing happens to us"

or.....another example to put it into context "You should know how to change a tire for yourself, God forbid anything should happen on the highway after dark and you blow a tire, you wont be stranded!"

that means "just in case something happens"

so I would say the politically correct replacement would be "just in case" or "I really hope not"

How about "all the equally correct and equally significant gods forbid, if they may"?
