I wish I had H.L. Mencken's wit.
We don't need to respect others' opinions. We just need to respect their right to have those opinions.

I agree. I cannot respect a religion in which a faithful and observant follower doesn't find his wife beautiful or children smart. This means that the man is not following a religion towards God, and that to me I do not respect.

Disagree. The guy might actually happen to have a beautiful wife and smart kids -- and himself be a Scientologist.
Sorry, no respect for a cult that believes that DC-8s were bringing people to Earth to get blown up, 75 million years ago.

What a shame, why didn't God get Robert Heinlein to run things. He seems to think he could do a better job. Need I say...disagree.

Sounds pretty good to me.
As long as you don't hold his wife being ugly and his children being dumb against him...just like you shouldn't judge a person solely on religion. That's respect.

LOL...good quote! I love it. :-))
I have to disagree with it though. I think we should be as honest as we TACTFULLY can be. If I tell you I respect your views, when I don't, I am nothing but a liar...a hypocrite.
But that was good for a laugh. Thx. :-D

I like it. Of course I don't respect the belief system of someone who subscribes to wild and sick neurotic fantasy and Stone/Bronze Age superstition. It is impossible to respect someone like that. But as long as they don't inflict it on others, it's their business.

If anything it is too respectful.
If someone thinks their wife is beautiful and their children smart it does not harm me in the slightest, I may induldge him. I hope you can see where this is going......

it seems to be more of a quote about manners, etiquette, than respecting one's religion. Essentially, Mencken is saying, "don't be rude" ... nothing more, nothing less.
