Don't let the numbers game deter you if that's what you want to do. I had a teacher in college whose words discouraged me and in retrospect I know that was wrong to let his comments affect me that way.

Build up a well rounded education and work experience. Volunteer: you rub shoulders with the pros and can establish contacts that will help you by providing references and letting you know how to work the system. You can also gain experience that will help you to get a paying job, as most jobs give credence to "equivalent experience."

My background is in interpretation, and after I answered your park ranger question I popped onto the National Park site and saw a job opening I qualified for in Big Bend, Texas. I'm working in the field now, but my degree was in communications and I gained my naturalist background as a volunteer. So my advice to you is to open as many doors as possible and keep them open until you have a better idea what you want to do, as strangers on Yahoo can't tell you, you'll need to figure that out for yourself.

Good luck!

You may want to consider Urban Forestry. I'm going for my Masters in Urban Planning, and I know Urban Forestry is a growing (no pun intended) field. An interesting synergy is formed by designing urban places, and preserving old growth trees in the city, designing parks to require no fertilizer and less irrigation, and replacing invasive species with native plants. Also, more buildings are installing green roofs, which are essentially parks on top of city buildings. If the NSF is too hard to get into, and you like cities, then check out Urban Forestry. You can also rest assured that this field helps the environment at large. Good luck.
