breeders are people who breed dogs together and sell the puppies...
they sometimes have a bad rep bcse some breed and breed their animals and just sell the puppies for money, not for the love of the breed or animals - they are aka puppy mills

There are a few good breeders around, but they are rare. Most breeders I have come across have done the following:

Dogs are inbred

They breed dogs together without giving thought to diseases or temperments of the parents

They breed without care of producing a animal of good conformation

They skimp on vet care

Dogs are treated like merchandise and kept in kennels rather than family pets

They constantly keep dogs pregnant just to make money

They produce so many dogs, when there are so many in shelters that need homes.

Like i said there are some good breeders. I met a lab breeder that had all his animals eyes and hips checked, they were raised as family pets, had great health care and he spayed and neutered his dogs when he was done breeding. But breeders like this are rare. So that is why breeders have such a bad rep with people in the animal community.

Some "reputable" breeders say that they don't want to sell their puppies to other breeders because they didn't want to risk their puppies in the hands of back-yard-breeders or puppy millers. Maybe the reason is that they want to avoid or at least diminish the chances of competence.
Some others ask questions that are too personal or simply don't want to sell someone a dog and that's it.
Personally, I've seen pages of "reputable breeders" whose dogs doesn't fit perfectly the much touted breed standard, but the prices are still outrageous.

Breeders...depends on the type of breeder. Some are puppy mill breeders......they breed the dogs until they die and keep them locked in a cage all there lifes. Check the United state huimane society site and you can see the horrific things done to animals.

too bad she didn't say what kind of breeder she is?

There are many self righteous breeders, but the truth is ANYONE who breeds a dog is contributing to pet overpopulation. Thousands and thousands of pets die in shelters EVERYDAY because there are no homes for them. Anyone who breeds a dog is selfish, that is just a fact. But that won't stop people from doing it. They will just make excuses that disqualify themselves from adding to the problem and all breeders tend to do this.
On an individual basis, some breeders are better than others. They make sure their puppies will be as healthy as possible and will make well socialized additions to the family. They offer to take a puppy back and have clauses in the contract about limiting the registration, which does next to nothing in controlling pet overpopulation, but hey, they can say they tried.

She may have been offering up a puppy that had been deemed "pet quality". This is a healthy pup that simply doesn't meet the breeders standards for one reason or another and a responsible breeder would not want this pup bred. Pet quality puppies are often sold with a spay/neuter contract.

Breeders are not bad. They are one of the most reputable ways to purchase a dog. A breeder simply breeds dogs for show or family pets. Some people though want to preserve their bloodlines and so you would not be allowed for that to to have puppies or sire any. The woman you were probably talking to was a breeder or showhandler herself.

there can also be bad breeders too but there any many reputable ones.

Everyone has their own point of view and perspective. She might view a breeder as someone who might not care for the animal(s) in the way that she does--she might be concerned that you would farm out "a family member."...yet, is she selling you a puppy or a grown dog? She might view you as competition.

Breeders dogs can be overbred and kept in kennels instead of bought as pets. Not all breeders do this though.
