I have pass due bills that are on my credit report so I am cleaning up my credit to get my score higher and get a credit card.

If you bring all your debts current and continue to pay all your bills on time for 12 to 18 months, you might be able to get a credit card. It won't be a low interest rate, high limit card. But if you pay that in full every month, your score will get better.

The credit score will have a positive impact once the creditors have reported it paid. The debt will still be on your credit report for quite some time but it will show paid -0- balance owed. Late items can stay on there for 7 years from the date they are paid. So if you have late items they are not going away anytime soon. They should come off by 2014.
