If you had two weeks or three weeks to spare Greyhound has good rates on advanced bookings. I would take that choice first. They have a 7 day discount.

If you are hitchhiking go straight up, not through Toronto. Head for Pembroke and then across on Highway #17. There isn't many places to work before Winnipeg though.

Out of Winnipeg get onto the Yellowhead highway through Yorkton Sask. The south route is comparatively brutal.

The toughest section is still the Lake Superior section from Sault Ste. Marie to Thunder Bay. I would seriously consider taking the bus there.

The problem is that with buses the further you go the way cheaper it gets. However you do know when you are going. With hitchhiking you gotta travel light and keep moving. Travel alone.

As far as work is concerned that is by luck and by golly. All of Northern Ontario is depressed but small places like Marathon Ontario sometimes have something. Thunder Bay won't. It all depends on what your skills are. If you work as a cook and kitchen you get work anywhere. A hairdresser or barber anywhere.

However if you can get a ride to Winnipeg don't stop for any reason.

Good luck.

Well, for the first leg of the journey, the laundry cart has had some success. After that, no idea. Sorry.
