Just signed up to buy new SMART car with Mercedes dealer on £1,000 deposit then £111 a month for 3 yrs with option to buy car for balance at end or hand car back. Finance guy has advised me to buy GAP insurance cost £300 for 3 years. (This is on top of normal insurance) Has anybody had any dealings with this or can they advise please?
I would appreciate serious replies only THANKS A LOT

Forgot to say that this would be included in the finance, it works out at £10 a month

Yes I've just bought a new VW Polo and was also offered this, I'm still thinking about it as it seems if anything were to happen it is quite a lot of money you would get, compared to just the normal insurance cover....however if nothing does go wrong obviously you have paid out £300 for nothing but then there are always ifs and buts....personally i think it does seem quite a good idea - might kick youself about it if something did happen.
I think I may have even just convinced myself to do it now!
Make sure you know under what circumstances it is guaranteed for though. I need to check this out myself.
Hope that helped and enjoy the new car!

The price sounds a bit high but I'd seriously consider getting it just the same. Should the car be written off while the balance outstanding on the contract is greater than the Fair Market Value, GAP cover will pay the difference. Without it, you'll have to pay the shortage out of your own funds.
Do check with your on insurance carrier first, though. They may offer it at a better price and you may not have to pay for the entire 3 years worth of cover up front.

When we picked up our mercedes we were given real high preasure sales pitch to buy gap insurance, we agreed it was a good idea, and having been in the showroom picking our car up for hours agreed to the gap insurance for £570. A couple of days later I checked online for GAP prices and was able to get the same policy for £120! Dont buy it from the dealership they rip you off!

get GAP --- my 2001 taurus was totaled - difference between what i owed and what insurance paid left a $2500 balance on my loan -- GAP paid the $2500
the cost for GAP is figured into the loan- so it is not an additional out of pocket monthly/yearly expense

Of course the garage want you to have it, they make commission on the sale. Actually it IS a good idea, but I'd try searching online first, you may well find a better deal.
