You do not go through customs when leaving a country, you go through it when entering a country.
So traveling France to England you will go through the British customs, not the French.
Passport checks before flying are done by airline and national authorities of the country you want to leave and after landing by the national authorities of the country you want to enter.

Yes, you need a passport. I live in France and each time I go to England (last time: a month ago), I have to go through customs.

No, I've done it before take a passport just in case.
