Take them as needed. Oxycontin a.k.a. Percocet is one of the most addictive so I'd stay away from it, use Vicodin because it's potential for abuse it low because the pills themselves are very large and contain Acetominophen which can harm your liver which will make you think about it before you do something bad.

Painkillers can mask a serious problem. If you still need them after a couple of weeks, I would call the doctor to see if all went well with the surgery.

I don't know about them being bad for your body, mind and soul but oxycontin has the most potential to be addictive and abused because it has the most oxycodone of any of the other opiod painkillers like vicodin, percocets or percodans. Each of these painkillers also contains some percentage of Tylenol and that is damaging to the liver.

You stop taking pain killers when the pain no longer bothers you.

Until it stops hurting, or you die from an overdose.

I have never seen a painkiller that listed any side-effects for your soul.

If you were me, you'd take them as long as the doctor would prescribe them :)
