I plan on joining the coast guard and have just heard that I can't join because I have a GED! I can't get ahold of a recruiter until Monday. Does anyone know about this?

it is very possible that there are no more slots open for GED holders available to enlist in the Coast Guard. they allow only a VERY small number each year, and when you consider they are only enlisting a small number(when compared to the rest of the military), we are talking maybe 5 for the entire nation.

easiest way to solve the problem is to take one semesters' worth of 100 or higher level college courses. 15 credits will elevate your GED to a HS diploma, and those restrictions are lifted.

Go to the recruiting office or look in the government pages of the white pages telephone book and see if it lists the "recruiter in charge number." The Coast Guard is small in all areas. I tried enlisted with them first a million years ago and remember my recruiter was overworked big time and this was in CA. I am sure it is even worse in MN. It is probably a one recruiter office and he has a million things to do on his own. He has to recruit, go to schools, go to MEPS, take care of all his paperwork and everything else that has to do with his job. Your best bet may be to contact the CG directly through their 800 number which can be found on the CG website. Another thing is that the recruiter you are trying to get into contact with probably has a huge area of responsibility. It could cover most of MN and maybe WI or IA. You never know so you should just contact the CG directly and ask them to set up an appointment for you to talk to a recruiter. Good luck.
