If we did that, we would be Christians.
This is not directed at those Christians who don't do this.

sweet:
I did not say reading the bible makes you a Christian. I said if we looked to the bible for answers to problems and questions (meaning that we trust and believe in it), that would make us Christians.

male_lonely_shy: What previous question?
I would also like your definition of "bashing."

I am a Christian, and I think some Christians genuinely think they are doing the right thing in doing this. They don't seem to make the connection that non-Christians are going to get nothing out of Bible verses, etc.
They think that because The Bible means so much to them that it will for others as well. It's not the case, is it?
That's why I don't give out Bible verses unless someone asks for them.
Thanks a lot for your respectful question. I really appreciate your kindness.

A better question would be- Why do non-believers, such as yourself, keep coming into this section bashing the Bible and Christians? I read your former question. You obviously have issues with either God or Christians that you need to work out. God Bless. Your question about evolution and bringing reference to discrediting the Bible because of the lack of a family tree for Cain. I mean come on. You have your beliefs and we have ours. Get over it.

One of two reasons:
1. we were all non believers at one time and then the Bible or someone speaking about it changed us. So we wish that would happen to others.
2. if we are simply arguing a point about something and saying "look to the Bible for the truth," it's a mistake, we should use logic enough to know that what it says doesn't matter to the non-believer. not all Christians are great at debating. They just know what they know and blab it out without thinking of the perspective of who they are talking to. I've probably done that before.

First, the Bible is the sole rule and norm for all matters regarding our faith and conduct in life. Christians take the Bible most seriously. That being said, you have a point. So I usually advise non-believers to read "Mere Christianity" by C.C. Lewis. Lewis, an avowed atheist, converted to theism and finally Christianity after rigid philosophical reasoning. His book in part chronicles that evolution and reasoning. At that point, one must go to Scripture.

Why would you think only Christians read the Bible? There are many who read it to try and disprove it too.
I would love to think that reading the Bible made a person a Christian, unfortunately there is more to it. You have to believe and live it, to be it. I have no problem in telling non-believers to read the Bible. It simply means, I don't want to rewrite it here for them. I don't have the time.
I read the Harry Potter books. Does that make you a Muggle and me magical? (L.O.L.)

Because God's word promises to not return void. And we hope and rpay that the person WILL open the bible and the Lord will use it to open their eyes.
You said 'If we did that, we would be Christians.'
Not necessarily, just open minded. The close minded decide things before looking at it thoroughly. Now that is wrong.
Some people who are really searching (because they are being draw) WILL open the bible and see the light. Others who just mock, would rather stay in ignorance. Sad! I pity those people.

You can read the Bible and not become a Christian.
Answer to your question: The Bible is God's word; it is what Christians beleive in.

I usually don't, but that is where we find answers and for many this is their way of sharing their source. Also, reading "Playboy" does not make a man a "Playboy". Anyone can read the Bible, but you have to believe to be a Christian.

If you know the source of an answer you refer others to it. Remember when you were in school and you knoe the answer you would raise your hand and give the answer. Well Christians have the Answer Book, Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth.

rebekkah... I have probably done this myself, even though I know that it is only the Holy Spirit whom can reveal "truth" and a non-believer does not USUALLY have that guidance...
Usually? Yup, that's what I said... because, even an unbeliever can suddenly have a moment when the Lord is able to "open their eyes and understanding" by something they see within the Bible if that person really desires to "know" within their heart.
That "one moment" may be all that is needed for the Lord to plant a seed....
Peace be with you :)
