First, church is not a place where only "good" people go. Church is a place where "forgiven" people go--and there is a difference.
Since your question is a tad on the non-specific, I will try and cover it from a few sides.
First, if you did something "really bad", coming to church and admitting it will not do any good. Jesus said that if you have offended someone, that you are to leave your time of worship (gift at the altar), go and find that person and make it right. Just admitting something is not enough. You must make restitution. If you are not willing to make restitution, you are probably not sorry, and you are not repentant.
If what you have done cannot be satisfied in any restitution, and you are truly penitent for what you have done, then God's grace and mercy come in to play.
Much of what Christianity stands on has to do with forgiveness. But that is not the same as "license". Christianity does not give you a free pass to sin and then come and seek forgiveness. If you are doing this, then obviously, Jesus is not Lord of your life. You are just looking for loopholes--trying to be a sinner and still get in to heaven. The only one you would be fooling is yourself--but not God.
Remember, when judgment comes, ALL works will be judged, including the intent of the heart. So even though said person may find his way in to church, his sin remains undealt with.
I hope this answers your question. It was a good one.

Very kind of you to ask. There is quite a bit to be said but the
bottom line is: As Christians we have a commandment in
1 John 1:9. If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to
forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Just as we accept salvation through the Blood of Jesus
by faith(not feeling) we trust God to set us right spiritually by
faith(not feeling). If we feel good, fine. But if we feel lousy after having confessed the sin it does not change the fact
that God has forgiven. God is not obligated to make us "feel
good" after we confess any sin. He is obligated to forgive us
our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, according to his word. Just reading the verse(1John 1:9)
makes me feel better anyway. I hope this helps but if you
want more dialog on this feel free to email me anytime.
I do not have a degree in Bible, but I take my personal relationship with Jesus quite seriously.
The only thing that will save mankind is the Blood of Jesus.
When he paid the ultimate sacrifice for our sin He did it once and for all. Both past, present and future. It had to be this way
because you and I know that as long we're in this physical body
we can miss it. The good news is that we don't have to sin,
but if we do, we simply apply 1 John 1:9. This is Bible.
EDIT: Hi Farah. If this doesn't make sense to you, don't let it bother you too much. Just remember that no matter how good or how
bad we are, Jesus really loves you, He really does.
Have a good day Farah.
DOUBLE EDIT: Farah, don't close out the question yet.
Let's see if Schneb will add a response, he's very very
good.
TRIPLE EDIT: You're are getting a lot of good responses
on this question. Some I agree, and some not.

That's not christian, that's catholic, and there are a lot of differences between catholosism and christianity. I, for one, disagree with catholosism on many levels. A man cannot forgive sin. Only Jesus, the one who paid the price for those sins can forgive sin. It only seems logical, but try telling a catholic that. For that matter try telling a catholic that their church was started by a roman ceasar who just wanted to keep the christians in his empire in line, which is why the priests were given so much power, and why only the priests were allowed to read the bible, so the people wouldn't be able to find the fraud that the church was pulling on them. But I digress :-)
Bottom line , only Jesus can forgive your sins.

This sounds like a Catholic issue, and I'm not expert, but....
I think the idea is that when you do something bad, and you realize it, admit it, and confess to it, that you will also make amends for it, and then commit to improving yourself so as not to do bad things again. After all, isn't the reason you admit to sin, or wrong-doing, is because it makes you feel bad and you want to stop the bad behavior? Confessing to the bad behavior is just the first step in shifting from sinful action to right action. You have to commit to making a change or the cycle of bad behavior will just repeat itself.

an crucial area of the Christian faith..and of alternative faiths too is the understanding that we 'have failed' in our awareness, sharing and expression of unconditional love. As a human race on earth..we've globally. The church has been adverse custodians of the liberty, and fullness of existence, Jesus tried to share whilst he replaced into here...yet it incredibly is the place grace and humility desires to step in..and with any luck quickly. i think sorry for Mr Atheist..he's hurting like something human beings..yet has nowhere to take it...it turns inward and makes you cynical and jaundiced in direction of others, blaming, prejudice, accusation by using concern..So there seems to be no greater ethical floor upon which everybody can stand to show the finger!! we are all area of the subject.....you opt for an outstanding style of religion have faith there is not any author being, so he has desire! sure, the church fails..however the actual easy it shines upon human beings has been the type between existence and dying for many tens of millions.

If you did something wrong, you just need it tell God that you made a mistake and you need his forgiveness and for Him to help you. You don not really need to go to a church for you to pray to ask God for your forgiveness, but you could get a pastor or someone else to pray over you. That is really helpful. Now if you repent for your sins, it doesn't also meen that there wouln't be consequences, but when you ask God for forgiveness, he will always forgive you no matter what, and it helps deal with consequences easier and help you to avoid doing the sin again.

Well...it depends, how bad is "really" bad? Cheating? Fornication? Murder?
The first 2 are not illegal to man's law and when you confess, since Jesus gave priests the power to forgive John 20:21-23 "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.’ And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."
But if you sin by committing murder, stealing, raping, etc...then you go to the church and confess your sin. The priest will tell you the next thing to do for forgiveness is to turn yourself into the cops...
So it's not like "Father I killed someone" "OK!!!" It's a lot more complicated than that...
-------------------------------
I just saw your edit. The reason WHY we ask for forgiveness is so we wont have those sins. If we sin and sin and sin and don't ask for forgiveness, when we die all those sins are with us. But if we ask for forgiveness and we get it, then God will not judge us on those sins because we've asked for forgiveness and we've received it.

Young Female,
A True Christian could not do such a thing. Their thinking would be on GOD and HIS CHURCH. They would be beyond hurting others or even thinking of such things. There are times when we all accidentally fall and need to ask HIS Forgiveness. If it is not a public sin we can pray and ask GOD'S forgiveness. If it is a public sin then we are to ask for the prayers of the Church members. Have a wonderful day.
Thanks,

I thought only Catholics went to the church and did confessions. Any person that believes in God, is a true Christian. You don't have to go to church just to talk to God. I work on Sunday, But I talk to God every chance I get. Even if I don't go to church I believe in God, I AM a true Christian.

I don't wait for Sunday. When I realize I've done someone wrong, I am immediately sorry. That leads my mind to ways of repairing the damage, and righting the wrong. I think you may have forgiveness, and indulgence confused.
