I think most people in America that identify themselves as non-believing, have no problem whatsoever speaking out. The problem is the vast majority of self-proclaimed Christians, that really are in no way Christian other than because their parents told them they are, and maybe they go to church without really believing or living by any Christian ideals. Those are the people that make religion seem a lot more legitimate than it actually is.

It's not that people are afraid to speak up. As soon as someone says that they are a non-believer or that they believe something different, a bunch of people try to convert them. Besides, a lot of people don't feel the need to broadcast their spirituality. Not all religions focus on recruitment. Some people feel that their spirituality is about their personal relationship with their higher power, not a competition to convert as many people as possible.

Of course

Bubba Gump Bush has declared on record that you have to be Christian to be an American because its one nation under god

Of course he neglects that the words under god were added only in 1951

Or that they are against the founding principles of the nation

Or that the nation has committed more atrocities - Vietnam, Korea, Iraq... - since then in the entire rest of its history

The evil Christian Empire brings as much fear to all who dissent as the evil Islam Empire ever will

Secular is the only way

It only bothers me when the Christians egg my car or destroy a Samhain display in my front yard. Nevertheless, I'm still saying what needs to be said after more than 60 years of knowing enough to open my mouth.

There are places where I wouldn't want to speak out, particularly in the south, but where I live I'm comfortable not being Christian.

Yes, I agree with you. They will mumble to say that "homosexuality" is a sin although they know it's a sin. That's a shame.
