The age 18 is the age in America which you no longer need your parents permission for things. This also means that you ( and no longer your parents) are soley responsible for your actions.

As for what you can do legally, some states have an age requirement of 21, and some states have an age requirement of 18, and some have a combination of both depending upon what it is you want to do.

Vote, live on your own, have sex, make your own medical decisions, join the armed forces, own a gun, get married, take out loans just about anything except choosing what beverage you want to drink.

You do not need permission for anything.
