Hi! I'm a Jamaican citizen who was on a Work and Travel program last summer 2006 in North Carolina and before I left I filled out my tax return forms. The problem is I didn't receive my social security number although I did apply for one. My employer told me he would mail my tax return document and my social security card to me when he gets them. He also told me that he would file for my tax return in January 2007. I got the document that stated my tax return were filed in February but all now I haven't received my social security card. Is this going to prevent me from getting my tax return money? I'm currently a Permananet resident in Canada

This sounds like the employer was not giving you reliable information. You would have needed a SS number before working and also to file the proper tax return. In addition if he withheld SS and Medicare he would have no way of reporting it to the government without a SS number. If you got something which indicated that a return was filed you should look on that document and see if there is a SS number. He should have provided you with a W-2 form in Jan. of 2007.

When it comes to IRS check with IRS. Http://www.irs.gov. When it comes to Immigration, Check with INS. Http://www.ins.gov. When it comes to Social Security, check with Social Security. Http://www.ssa.gov. This is the best advice anyone can give you on the matter. The agencies will assist just ask them. We know, we are an accounting firm that services accounts in over 35% of the U.S. for all kinds of people, all kinds of companies from public traded company to your simple mom-and-pops.

An P.S.? Never trust someone to do something for you when you may be able to do it yourself. It will not be their issue when the time comes to deal with the problems. Remember what they say, not to know is worse than knowing the wrong things. Seek agency help. Always. If not sure, it sounds funny, probably is. Do not trust anyone to just do it because you are unaware of the laws. Aka. Make yourself aware of them and you will not have such issues in the future.

Harsh P.S. perhaps. But reality knocks.

Employers do not apply for SSNs for their employees. You have to apply for that in person at a Social Security office. The card would be mailed to the address on your application.

Additionally employers do not file tax returns on behalf of their employees. You have to file your returns yourself as they require your signature on them.

It sounds as if you were scammed by a dishonest employer.

Sounds to me like you have been taken by the employer who was such a nice guy. I doubt seriously any taxes were ever paid on your behalf without some kind of identifying number.
