I give about a half tbsp. of peppermint schnappes to my 6 month old daughter to relax her and ease the pain of cutting teeth. my mother did this and I turned out ok but I've been surprised at the number of people who seem to be appaled by this. It's not like slamming shots or anything just a few drops.

In regards to "sweet" I've raised 3 childre prior to this one who are honest and have values not unlike those found on "little houe on the prairie", so think before you judge.and the only reason people are concerned about the ong term efect o TWO DROPS (+/-) is because scientists & dfs have 2 much time on their hands. my house has lead paint and asbestos siding, my 1972 dodge truck has a metal dash and NO airbag and if my kids get a knot on their head, it's lesson learned. youre not doing kids a favor by all this coddling and cushion gripping. I'M still alive my kid's are still alive and dong fine!!

I know, my Mom said she rubbed brandy on my gums when I was a baby. But it is awfully dangerous to be giving alcohol to a baby. I wouldn't give the baby ANY alcohol (in the bottle or rubbing it on her gums). There are many other options in any drugstore, or call you pediatrician.

It's really fine, it's such a tiny amount and only for a short period of their infancy it wouldn't cause any damage. I used spiced rum mixed with a bit of juice (rubbed on the gums), I would think peppermint schnapps might burn too much and maybe irritate the teething gums.
But my son's pain really wasn't bad enough that I had to use it very many times, and as others have said, orajel (and a lot of patience) usually does the trick.
Those apalled people don't know that fetal alcohol syndrome, which is a term that's only been used for the past few decades, occurs when the pregnant mother gets SLOPPY drunk on a regular basis throughout most of, if not the entire, pregnancy. You aren't hurting your baby as long as you're not overdoing it, and don't let anyone cause you to doubt yourself.
(I am NOT condoning drinking during pregnancy... I didn't drink a drop during either of mine... but SMALL amounts aren't going to cause any damage. Many european cultures drank nothing but "meade" for centuries because of how stanchy the water was in their un-plumbed cities, and here we are today.)

I personally would not, but don't believe you are trying to make her an alcoholic either. I always used Motrin, it helps with swelling that comes with teething and helps with pain and last 8 hours. There is also a tablet called simply "Teething Tablets" they are all natural and did the most good out of anything I tried when my kids were teething. You can find them by the vitamins at Wal-Mart etc.

Are you serious, that is such irresponsibility, I have heard that babies have lower ability to tolerate alcohol, I mean do you really want your child to grow accostumed to the taste of alcohol than when she gets older, she'll become an alcoholic, it can really happen. And also, if you did not realize that you do not give the baby the liquor just put it in their gums then that means you really did not outweigh this decision, think about more and ask a doctor, find out how this can be risky to your baby!

yes i do this to on my 4 month old but i just dab it on my finger and rub it on his teeth. but someone told me that you can use Vanilla extract on it cause it has alcohol in it and just rub it on and it helps just as good as a teaspoon of any kind of alcohol
There have been advances in science and thats why people dont think giving your baby alcohol is right i guess its cause parents in the 70's used to give ther babys paragorq and give them enought o sleep though the night and go out and party i really understand you b-c i dont want ppl looking down on me for this action and saying shes just trying to liquer her baby up and make it sleep i mean my son already grinds his gums and so i really understand you
Have a wonderful day

In my extended family just about all the women rubbed whiskey on their babies gums.
My grandmother had my mom do it to me when i was a tot.
Didnt hurt me at all.
I mean, we're talking like maybe once a day, every few days or something. Not like every few hours or anything.
Youre right though, a lot of people freak the hell out about it.
Orajel and tylenol can have the same effect.

A little bit won't hurt her. Just rub it on her gums. I gave mine some chocolate liqueur, about a teaspoon ,years and years ago when she was teething, and it did the trick. It works better than orajel, which actually makes their gums tougher, causing teething to take longer. A few drops will be fine.

It's called child endangerment. There is a reason there was an age limit put on alcoholic beverages. You don't know what the long term affects will be from just a few drops. Sometimes a few is all it takes. Having children comes with responsibilities, and you clearly don't have any.
Keep giving her alcohol, and when she goes to her next doctors appointment you better hope they don't find anything because your child should be taken away from you. You are what we call an irresponsible follower. Just because your mother did it doesn't make it right. My mother made me swallow vicks to help a sore throat, but the bottle clearly states "Don't take by mouth" Now when my children have sore throats they don't ingest vicks like I did, they suck on a throat lozenge. It has nothing to do with coddling, but good parenting. I guess you know nothing about that.

I would never give my baby alcohol, weather my mother did it for me or not... there are other options out there that you could use to ease her pain when teething.
Such as teething rings
and frozen wash cloth
ice pops
and oral gel
there is also Advil or Tylenol

It's fine. My mother did the same thing on numerous occasions when I was a baby and I'm fine. I think half of a tablespoon might be too much though. What about half of a teaspoon?
