Audacity is totally free, download it here;

you will also need to download this for it to work;
http://spaghetticode.org/lame/
just place it in the same folder you're exporting the files to and presto, you have new mp3 files! it's that simple

Going to need more information. What is the original format the "recording" is in? Is it a .wav file or is it an mp3? It is on a CD or cassette? Is the original recording on your computer yet? What format would you like to convert the file to?

Like an MP3? well if so download a program called AUDACITY and you can open up your recording in there and save the recoding as a MP3

Use the export option.
Then select what format you want to use i.e. .wav .mp3 etc.
