My grandmother just made sure the lids sealed, but ive been told for saftey you must boil the finshed jar w/ the pickles and lid on it an water for 10-15 min

yes. you have to boil the pickle jars to sterilize the contents and to create a vaccum.
are you using jamming/pickling jars with the ring lids?
you can skip this step if you're going to consume them within the next week or so.

If you're using lids and rings, the lids are only used once and provide the seal in a hot water boiling bath, by forcing the air out. As they cool, the rubber seal draws tightly around the rim of the jar and forms a concave indentation in the center of the lid, sometimes accompanied by a "popping sound" of the metal lid as it cools and seals. If after cooling, you can still press down the center of the lid, then use the contents immediately and do not store long term.

Putting the jars back in the hot water is an important step. By putting the jars into gently boiling water with the lid on, you are encouraging as much air to bubble out of the jars as possible. With as little air as possible inside the sealed jars, you have less risk of bacteria growth and spoilage. While the heat is forcing our air, it also cooks the contents a bit. Pickles should be in the boiling water for about 10 minutes.

You should boil them. Its the safest way to do things.
