The answer of course depends on your taste, and preferences! A good place to get information on restaurant options is via one of the free English language city guides that are available at hotels and restaurants throughout Beijing (although mostly on the East and West sides of town). I recommend That's Beijing magazine.

But here's a short list of yummy eats that come to mind (with menus in English)...:

BEIJING DUCK:
+ Made in China (must be ordered 24 hours in advance)
+ Da Dong Kao Ya (reservations recommended)
+ Quan Ju De is the oldest, and good for a tourist experience, but I don't think it's the best duck.

JAPANESE:
+ Hatsune (for sushi, sashimi and a broad selection of hit dishes)

TAIWANESE:
+ Bellagio (recommend the mango with coconut drink, and the "Three Cup Chicken")
+ Ding Tai Feng (must get the Xiao Long dumplings, they are delicious)

MALAYSIAN CHINESE:
+ Cafe Sambal (in a courtyard down a little alley near the drumtower, the Chilli Crab is out of this world)

HAKKA:
+ Lao Hanzi (along the southeast end of Shichahai Lake)

YUNNAN:
+ South Silk Road (also known as Cha Ma Gu Dao)

NOODLES:
+ Noodle Loft (delicious noodles in more styles and preparations than you can imagine)

SICHUAN:
+ South Beauty

Hope this helps!

Quan Ju De. The oldest Beijing Duck place is the best. Many places serve excellent food in Beijing but you nowhere had the atmosphere and showmanship of this place. Enjoy!

ohh i just came back from a trip to Beijing and around that area a week ago.. I'm sorry I can't name you any specific restaurants...but be SURE to try the roasted ducks there. it's a speciality in Beijing...and for sure, it will taste only the best from there. It's amazingly delicious and trust me, it's worth it.

Small neighborhood restaurants...assuming you mean Chinese food. The best food in China, regardless of city. Poking around the neighborhood will usually unearth some real treasures.

I'm with the "NO" to Quanjude crowd. Quanjude is overhyped, overpriced and over-rated. Give it a miss.
