It can be pretty bad but it does vary depending on your pain threshold. Also, it depends what type of anesthetic your dentist uses.

The best advice I can give is to just relax and not focus on it too much. If you build it up in your head, you'll practically be in tears by the time it comes...

It won't be one of your favorite life experiences but with numbing shots it's really not that bad. Let the dentist know that you're nervous about it so he can answer any questions you might have. Everyone is different as to how much shots they may need. If you feel any pain let the dentist know.

Bring your iPod or other audio device and listen to some calming music.

Bottom line a root canal is a whole lot better than the pain you have or will have if you need a root canal and don't get it.

I've had one and it's not painful at all. You won't feel a thing because the dentist will use an anesthetic. It may be sore for a few days but he will give you a prescription for pain killers that will dull the pain. The first day will be the worst. After that you will wonder what you were worried about.
Good luck

I had root canal on my front tooth. It was not painful at all. It was little enoying having a little brush pushed in and out of the hole. Sound like scraping a chalk board with your nails to me. Other than that didn't have any problem with it.

Everyone has a different threshold for pain.
Mine didnt hurt at all, but I could feel the pressure on the tooth that was being worked on so it was a little uncomfortable.
so with that...on a scale of 1-10 I'd say about a 3.

good luck
:)

From a good dentist it doesn't hurt at all ! I had my first one November of last year, the dentist didn't even knock me out. Just some local anesthetic and an Advil when he was done. I had no pain at all, and I am a crybaby at the thought of going to the dentist ! Don't worry about it !

Not painful during the procedure, but you will
be able to feel a slight sensation.

But hours later after the effects of the deadening begin to wear off; let me just put it this way: you had best to have had your
painkiller prescription filled because the pain is excruciating.

There's no easy way to break you the news- its very very painful. I had two. At first I felt fine, the area was numbed by anaesthesia. Then eventually it wore off and I was crying and laughing from the pain. yes, laughing- cuz it was way beyond my imagination. However you would also be getting prescribed painkillers, take these regularly and as and when you need it, but don't overdose, haha. it wears off in a day or two though, so its only short- term. :) Good luck and take care!

It depends on how many roots are involved, how skillful your dentist is and how tolerant to pain you are. Most of them are not painful. Go to an endodontist, not a regular dentist, for the best results.

I had my first one last year and it wasn't bad at all. No pain during the procedure and I only needed one pain pill that night. I was fine the next day.
