My mom is getting braces.
She's always wanted her teeth to be straight, but it's kind of awkward having a parent get braces.
I'm really glad that she's getting her teeth straight, I don't know when, but it makes me happy if she's happy.

However, it's kind of awkward. You usually don't see 'older people' with braces.
Any opinions on how to deal with it?

"Constructive criticism" please.
No rude comments, she IS my mother and I love her very much.

I have worked in the Orthodontic field and the number of grownups getting braces grows every day, I wore braces at age 44. We once had a patient in his 70's who had orthodontic tx. Many Physicians, Nurses and other professional people have braces. Many adults who couldn't afford braces as children or had their own children in braces instead of themselves are now being able to afford them and have the nice teeth they always desired. So don't feel awkward, If you look around you will see Lot's of adults young and older in braces!

Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years and who wrote the law that says braces are for kids? I had a 62 year old Nun that wanted her teeth straight all her a life and a family left her 25K and she did it. Your Mom's family probably didn't have the monies when she was a kid so WHY deny her now? Dosn't she deserve to have great looking teeth? In fact adults make better patients because the brush, floss and go crazy when they see how great they look when they come off. We don't have to threaten them to wear the retainers. And if they lose one they call right any for another one and NOT "forget" to tell their parents until the teeth start to shift.
Adults don't call and complain every day because their mouth hurts and cry they want them off and we have to spend hours convincing them to be patient. WE NEVER hear or see from them until their next appointment. They don't eat pizza, bagels and chew gum when told NOT to and break off brackets and lose them and bend the wires. They use the wax right and don't get cavities from not flossing and rinsing with fluoride.
Now, you kids have all the rights to braces why? Just love how great your Mom will look and stop acting like a child. I'll take an adult with braces over a kid anytime. LOL However, I love them both and would never not love helping my kids!! So lighten up, I have lots of adults in braces and they don't worry about the colors or agnonize if we can't have their school colors. So please have fun teasing you Mom and love her to pieces. She will look great when she is done and then you can brag about how great she looks!!! Marie

Alot of adults are getting braces these days. I wouldn't be embarrassed about it. Would you be more embarrassed to be the girl whose mom has braces, or the girl whose mom has nappy teeth?

This is not as odd as you think.

Sometimes age will make teeth require one later, and then sometimes it is not till later that one can afford them.

Good for your Mom.

what's to deal with? she's getting a great smile. just cause she's your mom, doesn't mean she's"older", just older than you. let it go.
