Been there. All I can say is don't make promises that aren't possible to keep. You'll know when you're fooling yourself.
Him and I made a ton of lousy foolish promises that were sweet and comforting, now we're just friends.
But it still hurts.
I would say get off the computer, meet someone that you can shake hands with and who isn't so far away. It saves heart.

Sure it can work. That's how I met my husband. My sister and I shared an aol account back in 1997, and she was on the computer all day. When she finally decided to get off, I told her to keep it online. Then I went into a chat room to talk to people, and I received an IM saying " I said hello about an hour ago, and you didn't respond". I said I'm sorry my sister was on at the time. I was talking now to 2 guys in IM, and still in the chat room. I stopped talking to the other guy in the IM, and got out of the chat room. Now I'm talking to the guy that my sister ignored. I had to get off the computer, so I gave the guy my phone number and told him to call me in 2 hours. I didn't think he would so I didn't give it much thought until 2 hours later when he called. We talked on the phone for hours. After a week he asked me to the movies. We moved in together 3 months later, and we have been together ever since. We have been together almost 11 years, and we have been married almost 9 years. We have 3 children, and things are still going great. So yes it is possible that you online relationship will last a long time. Anything is possible

It can only work if you actually meet each other, move closer to each other and spend time together in real life. Not fake online stuff where you can hide your true self and pretend to be better than you are.
I know a couple that have met on the internet and have been married 10 years, however, you have to do the in person courting for it to work.

I think you would actually have to meet the person and spend time with them like you would with any other person you would date.
