For those who don't know, some Christian girls are into this deal where they pledge themselves to be virgins for daddy and Jesus, and they wear a silver ring to show their commitment to staying virgin until they get married. They have this big celebration and everything. It's very creepy because it hearkens back to the days when girls were the property of their fathers until they got married, at which time they came under the ownership of their husbands. (That's where the practice originated of giving away the bride at her wedding.)
In at least one case, a girl tried wearing her ring to school and got in trouble because the school has a no-jewelry policy. She lost the case. Some said it brought up the issue of what rights do students have when it comes to expressing their religion at school? The answer, of course, is NONE. Students are there to LEARN stuff, not to make a public display of their religious faith. Jesus said to go pray and worship God in your closet, alone, away from the public, and these misguided twits want to do just the opposite.

Mim's answer is the one I'm thinking of. The case went to court in the U.K I believe, and the court ruled that the ring (with a bible verse inscribed inside) was not an expression of faith, like wearing a veil for Moslems. I don't know why the school sees the ring as a problem. How can some one else tell you what is appropriate to your particular faith?

I hadn't but read through the answers. Sounds like like that girl was trying to get attention or make it a religious thing, assuming she already knew about the 'no jewelry' policy. What a twit.
I think it does reek of being property. Do the guys wear one, too? I know when I get married, I certainly won't be claiming virginity by wearing white (Besides, not my color ;- ) Nor will ANYONE be giving me away. Besides, it would be difficult to convince anyone I was a virgin since my kid will probably be in the ceremony.

I heard about it a long while back but more recently a girl took her school to court because they would not let her wear the ring she claimed it was part of her faith like wearing a cross or even headscarf for muslims?? she lost the case.
