HK and SIG Sauer are two of the best in the world, but they do not deliver 'most bang for your buck' as they are pricey.
I am not a "Glock bandwagon" fan like many, they are not bad guns, just not all that. I own three and would trade either of them in a second for something interesting.
Beretta is good, not great and you can find many 92s on the market for attractive prices, as they are not as popular as they were 10 years ago. Springfield XD is I think a very good pistol at a good price and thinking about one myself.
Stay away from Smith and Wesson auto pistols. Sure, they have fixed a lot of stuff wrong with there first few generations of pistols, but they are still questionable and they don't hold value at all.
Ruger seems to have a lot of guns sent back to the factory for repair. Do a search on this and you will see what I mean. I think Ruger makes decent products but their politics force me to stay away in protest.
I have several Browning Hi Powers and consider them, when properly tuned, the best pistol ever. Not cheap though.
Have a friend who sells to law enforcement and he raves about Kahr. They look really well made and the cops love them, but then again, most cops I know are not really gun experts only a few.

HK pistols are too expensive for something polymer. I mthink that Ruger, S&W, Taurus, Kimber, CZ, and Springfield Armory are really good gun companies that give you a lot for the money. Right now I just have a basic Kimber Custom II and a Ruger Single-Six as far a handguns are concerned. I am not hungry enough for another one just yet. We just mioved and a lot of money has been spent on LCD and projection HDTV monitors. I might get my CZ-75BSA model back tjhat I had in 1993.That was a 9mm I let get away from me and I am sorry that I did. I fell for the Glock thing but it just did not work out.

I have a CZ-52 I got for about $125. They're about as cheap as it gets. Built like a tank though. Single action automatic, used by Czech military and police for years. Mine's about 50 years old, looks barely used. C&R eligible also. Uses 7.62 Tokarev ammo, not a huge slug but very high velocity. Not quite the cheapest ammo around. You can put a replacement barrel in it and shoot 9mm Luger ammo which is cheaper.

Springfield Armory. XD series is the best out there. Many choices and styles to choose from. Personal experience, I have put nearly 2700 rds. through mine without a failure. I have even had to find my gun in a pile of sand. I found it under about 2 inches of sand, shook it off and pulled the trigger without failure, ejected the empty mag and slammed a new one home and emptied that one also. No failures.

H & Ks are GREAT guns, but they are high dollar. Since you are asking about an H & K, then you sound like you're interested in an auto-loader. Consider the Glock. They are great pistols and less expensive than H & Ks. Also, Glock are available in more diverse calibers than other automatics.
Best.

Springfield Armory XD line. It's an excellent line of pistols, for a good price. For around 570 you get the gun, a lock, 2 mags, a holster, a double mag holder, and a speed loader. It's a great deal, and it's got a lifetime warranty.

It depends on what you want to use it for. But a good generic answer is: purchase a firearm from a known and respected manufacturer and odds are you will do OK. S&W, Glock, Colt, Ruger, Taurus, Browning, H&K, Sig Sauer,Kimber to name a few, all produce quality firearms.

Revolvers - Smith & Wesson
Semi Auto - Beretta or Colt
Glocks have been proven to become inaccurate with time from the wear and tear.
