First JKD is not nor has it ever been a style. Bruce Lee said so himself. I trained under Sifu Larry Hartsell (deceased) in 1975. He also told me the same thing. Since Bruce Lee died many have taken it on themselves to say that JKD is a style and teach it. but It was and is a philosophy, not an art. Bottom line is almost every instructor teaching what they call JKD is teaching different things. As for worrying about what generation an instructor is, I would not bother. The style I practice since 1967 was created around the 1300's. But that does not mean that the training in no good because it did not come from the founder. Besides every style was created based on other styles. so even those that are first or second generation students of the style are learning something based on other older styles. While i have studied with traditional and modern instructors, I know that it is the training and mastery of what is taught that is important not what style. Styles are like cars. It does not matter what brand you drive. It is only something used to get you from one place to another. Now,..... Instructors of all kinds of martial arts are a dime a dozen. but over the years it has become crystal clear that most instructors are not well trained. Find yourself an instructor that is well trained and teaching at a school that does not require that you sign a contract. If you can find that, then you have already started off well. The style is not as important as good training. If you practice bad martial arts for 20 years you will never be good at martial arts. If you practice properly for 20 years you are well on the way to mastery... ...

The two places where you'd be likely to find an instructor who trained with Bruce Lee would be Seattle and Los Angeles. Seattle is where Bruce was buried and where his first schools was opened. Dan Inosanto is based in Los Angeles and teaches at the academy there.

There are tons. I would bet you that every single state in the U.S. has a jkd class. Texas has at least 3 or 4 off the top of my head.

Any JKD class will teach THEIR version of JKD. Anyone that studies JKD is studying their own version of JKD.
