Most TVs display at 30 or 60 frames per second.
Film is usually recorded at 24 fps. If the input is at 24 fps, the TV needs to insert some extra frames to make it display at 30 fps (called 3:2 pulldown).
There are some high-end TVs that can actually display on the screen at 24 fps (pioneer has such a model) without inserting redundant frames. However, all TVs should be able to accept 1080/24p from HDMI regardless as to whether they display at 60 fps or 24 fps. The only source for 24 fps would be an HD player.

I've never seen the "24" part before, but the 1080p refers to the maximum resolution of the tv. The 1080 referes to how many lines of pixels, in this case, 1080 (the max for a regular standard definition tv is 480). The "p" refers to "progressive scanning" which basically means that the tv refreshes every line of pixels at once, providing a smoother picture than interlaced or "i" ( a standard definition set is 480i). 1080p is currently the highest-quality HD available, although, unless you have a high-def source material such as blu-ray discs or HD-DVD, you probably wont be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p (which is the more common HD format, and a lot cheaper as well)

1080 is the resolution (1920x1080) and the 24 part refers to refresh rate (Hz). It pretty much means frames per second so the higher the better. 60 is the most right now and many tv's can handle it. Source wise blu-ray players are one of the few that support it.

It's an HDTV mode for displaying movies transferred to TV or DVD at 24 frames per second, the film standard.

its the resolution of the tv. there are 2 hd resolutions hdtv's use. 720p (1280x720) and 1080p (1920x1080). 720p hdt's can also display 1080i whick is 1080p but the lines are interlaced to fit on a 720p display.
