"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters - yes, even his own life - he cannot be my disciple." -- (Luke 14:26)
Most Christians feel obligated to soften the face meaning of the word 'hate' to something like 'love less than me,' even though the Greek word miseo means 'hate.'

The word miseo has a larger more inclusive meaning than our modern day definition of hate.
The same as feet, use to included everything from the waist down. And hand meant everything from the elbow down.

Whose parents will you hate to be a disciple of the Lord Jesus?
It is the bad parents. But if your parents is good, what is the commandment of Christ?
Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
Ephesians 6:2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
Ephesians 6:3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

According to the Bible, yes you do have to hate your family in order to be disciples of Jesus. Those who say otherwise are not real Christians at all.

We also have the commandment to honor our father and mother, and the one to love one another, and the one to treat others as we would like to be treated...
...Sometimes in the Bible, you'll run across things like this - where commandments seem to conflict. I think the application of a little prayer, and a little common sense is a fine approach to such occasions, over the application of Greek linguistics. If you want to know what God wants you to do, ask Him yourself.

These sorts of bible verses from Jesus line up perfectly with how we define cults. Now I get it - religions are just cults with more members.

Only if your parents hate God. You can love them too, but if you want to follow Jesus, you need to leave your parents' ways even if it causes you to live like enemies.
